Christian Braun Is Suddenly Carrying Bigger Nuggets Expectations

Deck: Christian Braun aims to silence critics as he makes significant strides in training camp, promising a comeback for the Nuggets this season.

Christian Braun is starting to look like the player the Nuggets need him to be again, and that’s a major development in Denver’s early preseason work.

After a 2025-26 season wrecked by injuries, the Nuggets have gotten encouraging signs from some of their key pieces in the first week of training camp and through the first two preseason games. Aaron Gordon, Cameron Johnson, and Braun all missed significant time last season, but each appears healthy heading into the new year.

Braun’s case stands out the most. He played only 44 games last season and never seemed fully right even when he was on the floor.

The burst wasn’t there the way it usually is, and his three-point shooting fell to a career-low 30.1%. By the playoffs, he had become the team’s most heavily criticized player, drawing plenty of frustration from fans who wanted him moved, if his contract even made that possible.

Now, though, the early signs point in the other direction.

At training camp, Braun said he has been working to get his explosiveness back after dealing with a left ankle injury that changed the way he had to move.

"I jump off my left leg, and [the injury] was my left ankle. And I've jumped specifically off my left leg my whole life.

A lot of it was kind of learning how to do different things. Maybe jump off two feet.

Maybe play off your right leg. And you could see, sometimes my timing was just way off," he said.

"... It will be good for me in the long run.

Your explosion comes back slowly, and I think we're getting really, really close. I worked really hard this summer on it ...

I think I'm in a good spot and I feel really good."

The preseason box score hasn’t been eye-popping - Braun has totaled 11 points, seven rebounds, and shot 5-11 from the field over the first two games - but the eye test has been more encouraging. He has looked closer to his old self, even if the full version may still take a little time to return.

There’s another piece to the story, too: Braun is showing more with the ball in his hands. Jamal Murray said early in camp that Braun has made real progress as a ball-handler, which matters for a Denver team that could use more help in that area.

"Guys are getting more comfortable bringing up the ball with pressure ... CB's actually gotten much better just handling the ball," Murray said.

Braun said he has been working on that part of his game every offseason and feels comfortable handling the ball and helping set up the offense to ease some of Murray’s burden.

That combination - better burst, cleaner ball-handling, and a healthier body - could make Braun one of the Nuggets’ biggest swing pieces this season. He’s entering the first year of his five-year, $125 million contract, and Denver badly needs that investment to pay off. If last season’s injuries are truly behind him, Braun may be set up for a much different year.

Cam Johnson Is Already Making The Nuggets Feel Better About That Bet

Cam Johnson has wasted little time easing any early nerves about the Nuggets decision to keep him in Denver at a $23 million price tag. After weighing options around the roster and salary sheet, the club held firm on Johnson and has already gotten the kind of preseason showing it was hoping for, with the forward looking more confident and comfortable as a steady part of the rotation.

The Nuggets clearly viewed Johnson as a player worth betting on for consistent production, even with the market around him drawing interest. Rather than treat him like a movable piece, Denver chose to make the financial fit work and leave open the possibility that the real payoff comes once the games count for more than tune-up minutes. Nuggets May Finally Have An Answer For Their Non-Jokic Minutes

Denvers second preseason game against Utah offered a welcome glimpse of depth, and it came from a group the Nuggets badly need to stabilize. The second unit looked far more organized under David Adelman, with Marvin Bagley III, Alpha Diallo and Julian Strawther all making a visible impact as the bench gave the team real minutes of production beyond the starters.

Bagley was especially active, scoring 10 points and posting a team-best plus-minus, while Diallo added 8 points with a pair of threes. Strawther also stood out with 15 points and three made triples, and the encouraging part for Denver is how cleanly that work fit into a bench rotation that has been searching for a better answer when Nikola Jokic sits. Nikola Jokic Just Got Another Massive All-Time Center Endorsement

DeMarcus Cousins gave Nikola Jokic another strong nod in the ongoing all-time center debate, putting the Nuggets star in the top seven or eight centers in NBA history while making clear just how high he already views him. Cousins praised Jokics complete skill set and called him the greatest offensive center the game has seen, a compliment that fits the way Denvers big man has continued to stack historic seasons on top of a championship run.

Jokic already has the 2023 title and three MVPs on his rsum, and his recent numbers have only strengthened the case that he belongs in any serious discussion about the positions legends. Cousins left the conversation with one notable wrinkle, though, and it adds another layer to where Jokic might land when the full history of the center spot is judged. [Read more 🡒]
