It's been a challenging period for the Denver Nuggets, and some insights from Bill Simmons shed light on their current situation. Despite the struggles, Nuggets fans have reason to remain hopeful.
Simmons pointed out, "I'm still not going to panic, because they still don't have Aaron Gordon." His return is highly anticipated and could be the turning point for the Nuggets.
During the February 23rd episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, with guest Zach Lowe, Simmons delved into the Nuggets' recent performance, noting their 16-16 record over the last 32 games. It's clear that Denver has been treading water for much of the season. Simmons highlighted their last significant victory against the Celtics on January 7th.
Injuries have plagued the Nuggets, with key players like Nikola Jokic, Gordon, and Peyton Watson sidelined. Watson, in particular, was having a breakout season before a hamstring injury put him out of action.
Simmons also touched on the difficulty of Denver's recent schedule, particularly their game against Golden State. "They got screwed today by this little-known thing the gamblers love.
It's three games in four nights, and the fourth game is a day game. It's like death," he explained.
This grueling schedule took its toll, as the Nuggets were outplayed by a depleted Warriors team, surrendering 128 points.
The return of Aaron Gordon is crucial for the Nuggets, who have struggled defensively in his absence. With Gordon, their defensive rating is an impressive 108.9, placing them third in the NBA.
Without him, that number jumps to 117.6, dropping them to 27th. His presence is sorely needed.
Zach Lowe emphasized the lack of size on the wing without Gordon and Watson, making it difficult for Denver to contend with smaller lineups. This was evident in their games against Golden State and the Clippers, where Bennedict Mathurin scored 38 points. "There's nobody to punish the smaller guards on the block, on the glass," Lowe noted.
The Nuggets could benefit from more physicality, and Gordon's return might just provide that edge. They'll need to weather a few more games before he re-enters the lineup, but his comeback could be the boost they've been waiting for.
