In a nail-biter at Crypto.com Arena, the Los Angeles Lakers edged out the Denver Nuggets 127-125 in overtime, showcasing a thrilling display of grit and clutch performances. Just when it seemed the Lakers were headed for a loss, Austin Reaves pulled off a jaw-dropping play to push the game into overtime, setting the stage for Luka Doncic to seal the victory.
With the Lakers trailing 118-115 and only 5.2 seconds left, Reaves faced a daunting task. He needed to intentionally miss a free throw, recover the ball, and score.
Against all odds, he executed flawlessly. Reaves missed to the left, snagged the rebound, and sank a game-tying floater, a move that will be remembered as one of the season's highlights.
In his postgame chat with ESPN’s Lisa Salters, Reaves reflected on the moment.
“I made a bad play earlier,” Reaves admitted, referring to a strip by Nikola Jokic. “But you’ve got to move on. I saw the opportunity and went for it.”
Jokic had been pivotal for the Nuggets, orchestrating a brilliant cross-court pass to Tim Hardaway Jr. for a three-pointer and then stripping Reaves on a drive. With a 115-113 lead and mere seconds remaining, the Nuggets seemed poised for victory, but Reaves had other plans. When asked if he had practiced such a play, Reaves recalled a similar moment from his AAU days.
Reaves finished the night with an impressive stat line: 32 points on 12-21 shooting, seven rebounds, six assists, a steal, and a block. This marks his third consecutive 30-point game, signaling a resurgence after a post-All-Star break slump.
While Reaves’ heroics were electrifying, Doncic’s game-winner was equally spectacular. Evading a double team, Doncic nailed a step-back jumper over Spencer Jones with just 0.5 seconds on the clock. It was another clutch moment from the Slovenian star, who shared his thought process with Salters.
“I wanted the last shot,” Doncic said. “I worked around the double team, trusted my step-back, and took it.”
Doncic’s performance was stellar, marking his 36th 30-point game this season. He ended with 30 points, 11 rebounds, 13 assists, a steal, and three blocks, underscoring his All-Star caliber.
Thanks to the combined efforts of Reaves and Doncic, the Lakers extended their winning streak to five games, now sitting third in the Western Conference with a 42-25 record. With momentum on their side, they look to continue their ascent against the Houston Rockets next.
The Lakers are making a statement, proving their doubters wrong by toppling top-tier teams. Keep an eye on this squad as they march forward, fueled by a blend of youthful exuberance and veteran poise.
