Travis Kelce made it clear Monday night that the Chiefs’ pregame space is not up for grabs.
During warmups before Kansas City’s game against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium, Kelce and the Chiefs’ wide receivers were getting loose when Denver’s punters and kickers joined in. The routine turned testy once a few Broncos punts started drifting past midfield. One landed in Kansas City’s area, and Kelce picked up the ball and booted it into the stands.
He wasn’t done there. When another Denver punt came toward the Chiefs’ pass-catchers, Kelce waved off a Broncos ball boy, got to it first and sent that ball into the stands, too.
“Travis Kelce wasn’t messing around pre-game ahead of MNF against the Broncos,” SVPod shared on X.
The moment echoed a similar frustration Kelce dealt with in 2024 against the Baltimore Ravens, when kicker Justin Tucker left his helmet, football and kicking tee near the area where the Chiefs quarterbacks were warming up. Kelce went over that situation on the “New Heights” podcast with his brother, Jason Kelce.
“If you want to be a (expletive) about it, you keep your helmet and your football and your (expletive) kicking tee right where the quarterbacks are warming up. … If you’re not going to pick that up, I’ll happily move that for you,” Kelce said.
He later said Tucker treated it like a joke and a little competitive back-and-forth.
“Justin came out and he said it was more of a joking gesture and kind of a fun, competitive [move] and I get it,” Kelce said. “He was kind of winking at me, being a (expletive) about it, trying to get under the skin.
… We just weren’t in a joking mood. We were ready to get after it.”
Patrick Mahomes has also taken issue with that kind of thing. Speaking to KCSP, he said the Chiefs have used the same warmup routine for seven years, and only a handful of kickers have gotten in the way.
“I’ve had seven years of doing that same warmup routine, and there’s only been like three occasions where there’s been a kicker that wasn’t … moving out of the way,” Mahomes told KCSP. “It was in Baltimore all three times.”
Monday’s scene showed just how seriously the Chiefs protect that pregame routine.
