Tim Tebow is headed back to Empower Field at Mile High, and the Broncos are giving him a front-row role for Sunday’s home opener.
Denver announced Thursday that Tebow will be the team’s honorary flag-planter before its Week 2 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, set for 2:05 p.m. MT on CBS. It’s the Broncos’ first home game after Monday night’s 31-10 loss at Kansas City, and it brings Tebow back to the stadium where he authored the signature moment of his NFL career.
This will be Tebow’s first time back at Empower Field since his overtime touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas in the 2011 playoffs. That 80-yard strike on Jan. 8, 2012, came on the first play of overtime and sent the late Pro Bowl receiver racing into the end zone to stun the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round.
The Broncos’ connection to Tebow runs deep. He spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons in Denver after the team picked him in the first round following a college run that included two national championships and a Heisman.
Denver later traded him to the New York Jets when it handed the offense to Peyton Manning. His final NFL stop came in Jacksonville, where the Jaguars gave him a look at tight end during 2021 training camp.
That playoff win over Pittsburgh remains the moment that defined Tebow’s Broncos tenure, but it was far from the only wild ride. His starts in Denver were marked by improbable comebacks and plenty of drama, the kind of stretches that made every week feel like a new chapter.
Bo Nix has made clear how much Tebow meant to him growing up, calling him his “childhood hero.” The current Broncos quarterback also tied Tebow’s famous January night to his own overtime playoff win over the Bills last season, which made him the first drafted Broncos quarterback since Tebow to win a postseason game for Denver.
The two quarterbacks are set to make that jersey swap official on Sunday.
“Thank you for giving me someone to look up to,” Nix wrote for Tebow in the video. “Thank you for being a friend now.”
Denver and Jacksonville both enter the game at 0-1.
