The Denver Broncos are heading into 2026 with a new voice on offense, but the biggest question in Denver might not be whether Davis Webb can handle the job. It might be whether Sean Payton can stay away from it.
For most of Payton’s head coaching career, he has been the one steering the offense on gameday. That changes this season after he made the surprising decision to turn play-calling over to Webb, his new offensive coordinator.
The move came after the AFC Championship Game loss to the New England Patriots, when Payton fired Joe Lombardi, his longtime offensive coordinator from his New Orleans Saints days. Webb then emerged as a sought-after name in the head-coaching cycle and also drew interviews for other offensive coordinator openings before Payton settled on him as the man to run the offense.
Still, not everyone is convinced Payton will stay in the background for long.
Gilbert Manzano of Sports Illustrated made a pointed prediction that Payton will reclaim play-calling duties at some point this season, even if only briefly. Manzano said a friend asked him, “How long until Sean Payton takes play-calling duties from his offensive coordinator Davis Webb and does it himself?”
Manzano added, “At the time, I was returning from my training camp visit with the Broncos, and all I heard was how great Webb has been for the offense. So, I told my friend, I don’t see that happening at all.
But for the sake of being bold, I’ll say Payton will call plays for at least one game this season and then hand the job back to Webb. Head coaches have a lot of pride, and it's not easy for them to give up play-calling.

That’s a pretty aggressive call, but it’s not hard to see how it could happen. If Denver’s offense hits a rough patch early in the year, Payton could decide to take over and try to steady things himself. And if that move works, giving the headset back might not feel so simple.
There’s also a bigger ripple effect to watch. If Webb loses the play-calling role, it could push him toward other opportunities after 2026, even though he should still draw head-coaching buzz in the next cycle regardless.
Either way, the Broncos are expected to have a dangerous offense, and it got even more intriguing after the team traded for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle this offseason.
