In a bold move that has the Denver Broncos buzzing, general manager George Paton pulled the trigger on a trade that brings wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Mile High City. The cost?
Two of the Broncos' first three 2026 draft picks. It’s a hefty price, but Paton believes the potential rewards make it all worthwhile.
“No one loves picks more than me, so, that’s hard,” Paton admitted at the NFL Annual Meeting. He’s well aware of the risk, having traded his share of picks in the past. But sometimes, you have to gamble to win big.
Last season, the Broncos were in a groove, sitting at 7-2 with a six-game winning streak. At that point, they weren't ready to meet Miami's steep asking price for Waddle.
“We were healthy at receiver,” Paton explained. “We were on a win streak.
We were rolling pretty good.”
Fast forward to now, and the landscape has changed. Injuries took a toll, and the need for a dynamic playmaker like Waddle became clear.
Miami’s price tag was still high, but the Broncos saw an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. “It had to be a unique circumstance for us to do this,” Paton said.
“We just felt this was too unique to pass up.”
The wheels really started turning around the NFL Combine. Paton reached out to Jon-Eric Sullivan, the new Dolphins general manager, and negotiations picked up steam.
“We’d done a lot of work at the trade deadline,” Paton noted. The Broncos were confident in their understanding of Waddle, both as a player and a person.
Paton even consulted with Waddle’s college roommate, Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, to ensure Waddle would be a good fit in the locker room. With all the pieces in place, the Broncos pulled the trigger.
It’s a bold move that could pay huge dividends. While the price was steep, Paton is betting that Waddle’s impact will be even greater. Now, Broncos fans can only wait and see if this gamble will lead to glory on the field.
