San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the team announced Saturday, July 25.
The 49ers said Shanahan will still take part in team activities at the start of training camp, but only on a limited basis while he recovers. In the statement, the organization also thanked the first responders who helped at the scene.
"San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries," the team said in a statement. "Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care."
With Shanahan sidelined for now, assistant head coach Chris Foerster will handle head coach duties, along with the team coordinators.
"The statement added that assistant head coach Chris Foerster "along with team coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities during this period."
The team shared the update on social media, and 49ers fans quickly filled the replies with support for their coach.
"Get healthy and be well, Coach. We gotta a great rivalry to continue," one said.
"Get well soon Coach. Know your staff's got your back until you do," another added.
"(Prayers) for Kyle I hope he has a quick recovery and he's back on the field soon," one more said.
Shanahan has spent nine full seasons as the 49ers’ head coach. He was hired on Feb. 6, 2017, and is now entering year No. 10 with the franchise.
