Sean Payton isn’t leaving much room for doubt when it comes to Ja’Quan McMillian’s place in Denver.
The Broncos’ nickel corner is heading into a contract year, but Payton made it clear back in June during OTAs that he wants the 26-year-old in the fold long-term, even though no new deal has been worked out yet.
“Absolutely,” Payton said when asked if he wants McMillian in Denver long-term.
“The ball finds him. We keep talking about taking it away.
We even forget Buffalo on the road, Monday night [in] ’23. The first series of the game, ball’s out and he’s causing a fumble.
He’s just around it all. That’s not just good fortune-that’s the skill set.”
McMillian has earned that kind of backing. Since pushing his way up the depth chart as an undrafted rookie in 2022, he’s become a key part of Denver’s secondary. Last season, he played in all 17 games and finished with 56 total tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions and four sacks.
He and third-year corner Riley Moss are both set to enter contract years in 2026, which naturally puts their futures under the microscope. But Payton doesn’t sound worried about McMillian’s situation spilling over into his play this season.
“He has all the things you’re looking for. Like when I say grit, chip on his shoulder," Payton continued.
"I think he’s so focused in preparing to play and play well. I’m sure he’ll compartmentalize that, and it will take care of itself very well.
He’s doing real well.”
That confidence matters because McMillian brings more than just steady coverage. He’s been a disruptive piece in the backfield too, with seven sacks and nine QB hits over the past three seasons. That kind of production makes him hard to take off the field.
Denver does have options behind him if needed. First-round pick Jahdae Barron played 30% of the defensive snaps last season, compared with McMillian’s 66%, but he has the size and skill set to handle the nickel spot if called upon.
Still, McMillian’s versatility gives the Broncos a player they’d clearly prefer to keep around. He can line up as a traditional corner, he can blitz, and he keeps showing up around the football. For Payton, that makes the answer simple.

Broncos Fans Have Waited Years For A Move Like This
The Broncos have spent years trying to stabilize the linebacker spot, and this offseason has brought only limited help to a position that has remained a concern. That is why the possibility of a bigger swing has started to surface, with Denver at least being mentioned as a team that could look outside the building for an answer rather than waiting for internal options to sort themselves out.
Miamis rebuilding posture makes that kind of move easier to imagine, especially if a proven veteran becomes available in a market where contenders are always hunting for impact defenders. A player who just earned first-team All-Pro honors would fit the profile of the kind of upgrade Denver has been missing, and if the Broncos are serious about changing the look of that unit, this is exactly the sort of opportunity that could test how aggressive they want to be. 4 Overlooked Broncos Who Could Crash The 53-Man Roster
The Broncos head into 2026 training camp feeling like a team that can chase a Super Bowl, but the back end of the roster still has room for a few under-the-radar names to force their way into the conversation. Nick Gargiulo, Tyler Badie, Matt Henningsen and Jaden Robinson all fit that mold in different ways, with each player bringing a case that is a little less obvious than the bigger names around them.
Gargiulo is trying to re-enter the mix after missing all of 2025 with an ACL injury, while Badie is working to stay relevant in a crowded running back room because of the little things coaches tend to value. Henningsen is also back in the fight after his own injury absence, and Robinson remains a developmental secondary piece after spending last season on the practice squad. None of them are locked in, but all four have enough going for them to make camp decisions worth watching closely. [Read more 🡒]
Broncos Fans Will Care About What This Could Mean For Marvin Mims
Bo Nix spent part of his latest comments stressing something teams often talk about but do not always build around: continuity. The Broncos quarterback framed long-term success as something that usually comes from a group sticking together and growing into the same system, a reminder that Denvers offense is still trying to build the kind of cohesion that can pay off over time.
For Marvin Mims, that backdrop matters because Sean Payton continues to speak highly of the second-year receivers steady play. Payton said Mims has been consistent and deserves more touches, while also pointing to Denvers receiver depth as a good problem to have. For a player trying to carve out a bigger role, that is the kind of praise that can lead to more opportunity, even if the exact path there still has to be sorted out. [Read more 🡒]
