Jaleel McLaughlin Sends Clear Message As Broncos Role Remains Unsettled

Can the innovative coaching styles and player potential across the Broncos, Chargers, and Chiefs lead to a dynamic shift in the AFC landscape?

Jaleel McLaughlin’s role in Denver has only gotten more crowded, but the Broncos running back made it clear he still wants to be part of the picture. After a promising rookie year as an undrafted free agent, McLaughlin has had trouble locking down steady snaps, and he’s now even lower on the depth chart than he was a season ago. Even so, he said the choice to stay in Denver came down to where he wants to win.

“Man, I love it here,” McLaughlin said, via Broncos Wire. “I love being here in Denver and playing with this team.

I love our offensive line, I love our quarterbacks, I love our receivers, I love our running back room, I love our defense… I want to win here. I told Coach (Sean) Payton I want to win here.”

In Los Angeles, the Chargers are starting a new chapter with Mike McDaniel taking over as offensive coordinator after his run as the Dolphins’ head coach. McDaniel’s message around Justin Herbert is simple: this isn’t a repair job. He sees a quarterback who is already elite and wants to sharpen the edges rather than reinvent anything.

“It wasn’t like I was trying fix something that was like, ‘This is broke,'” McDaniel said, via Eric Smith of the team’s site. “We’re looking at a player that is very, very talented and top tier in achievement his whole career. [We want to] try to take him to the next level where he can own certain things and really get the ball to his teammates as fast as possible and help efficiency of the offense.”

McDaniel also said he asked Herbert to change his front foot to his left foot, and the quarterback didn’t push back. Herbert has already bought into the adjustment and has been working through reps with McDaniel during the offseason.

“I don’t mandate it, but with Justin I really just showed him where I thought it would be advantageous,” McDaniel said. “He didn’t blink for a second and was excited to attack it. When you have players like that that go after their craft in that way, you can do things, change things that have been standardized in their game for years and you can do it with reasonable expectations and higher performance.”

Herbert described himself as fully on board with the new instruction.

“Mike just talked about how he saw the quarterback position being played and why he thought that was the best way,” Herbert said. “Jumped on board and got as many reps as we could and it’s been going good so far.”

In Kansas City, Kenneth Walker is already making an impression during offseason work, with the Chiefs viewing him as a piece that can round out their offense. Trey Smith and Patrick Mahomes both had strong things to say about the running back, while Alohi Gilman also praised the energy he brings.

“Definitely excited to work with K9,” Smith said of Walker, via Nate Taylor of ESPN.com. “He’s awesome, man.

Another West Tennessee native, so that’s cool to have one of those guys back there. I know he’s tough.”

“You can tell he truly cares about football, he cares about his teammates,” Mahomes added. “If he’s not in the play, he’s helping the guys on the sideline and he’s trying to learn and [is] asking me questions.”

“He’s a beast, seeing him run the ball,” S Alohi Gilman noted. “I’ve got a lot of respect for guys like that.

They’re just about their business. I think it’ll bring a good energy to this offense.

It’s awesome to be his teammate.”

Broncos Uniform Overhaul Is Getting The NFL Respect Fans Wanted

When the Broncos rolled out the Mile High Collection for 2024, it was clear the franchise wanted the new look to do more than just freshen up the closet. The mix of the 77 Throwbacks and the Midnight Navy set was built to lean into Denver and Colorado identity, and the early reaction around the league has backed up the idea that this was more than a cosmetic tweak.

Sports Illustrateds Mike Kadlick slotted Denver 10th in his ranking of all 32 NFL teams uniform combinations, a solid sign that the overhaul is getting the respect fans were hoping for. The Broncos landed behind a handful of other clubs, with the Chargers at No. 1 and several familiar rivals grouped around them, which only adds a little extra edge as the team moves toward training camp and gets ready to show the new threads on the field. Three Broncos Backups Could Quietly Decide Denver's 2026 Ceiling

The Broncos ceiling in 2026 may have as much to do with the back end of the roster as the names at the top of it. Malcolm Roach has already shown he can help on the defensive line, and with John Franklin-Myers gone in free agency, there is a path for his workload to matter more if Denver leans on his run defense and pass rush production. It is the kind of quiet swing factor that rarely gets the spotlight in July but can shape how sturdy a defense looks by the time the season starts.

Inside linebacker is murkier, with Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad ahead of a spot that is still very much up for grabs. The Broncos also have a rookie tight end in Justin Joly who has a realistic chance to stick and could fit as a receiving option in the TE3 conversation, which adds another layer to a roster battle worth watching. If Denver gets useful answers from those backup jobs, the 2026 roster starts looking a lot deeper and a lot more complete. [Read more 🡒]
