Giants Kicker Younghoe Koo Blames Embarrassing Miss on Bizarre Distraction

A botched field goal and a surprising excuse from kicker Younghoe Koo added to the Giants' unraveling season in a loss that underscored just how far the team has fallen.

The Giants’ season has somehow found yet another low point - and this one came with a bit of unintentional comedy.

On Monday night, New York was thoroughly outplayed in a 33-15 loss to the Patriots, dropping them to 2-11 on the year. That record tells part of the story. The rest is a mix of quarterback carousel, coaching upheaval, and now, a special teams blunder that perfectly encapsulates the kind of season it’s been in East Rutherford.

Let’s set the scene: second quarter, field goal attempt. And then... chaos.

Kicker Younghoe Koo lined up for what should’ve been a routine attempt. But instead of sending the ball through the uprights, Koo’s plant foot caught turf well before he ever made contact with the ball.

The result? A complete whiff.

The ball never moved. Neither did the scoreboard.

And the clip quickly made the rounds online - not because of a highlight, but because of how surreal the miss looked in real time.

Koo later explained the miscue, saying the ball had shifted slightly due to the cold weather, throwing off his timing. “I was approaching the ball and, cold weather, the ball kind of slipped out at the bottom so it was moving,” he said.

“I wasn’t able to kick through the ball. The ball was moving when I was driving to it, so I just pulled up on it.

Jamie [Gillan] did a good job of catching it and putting it back but, at that point, it was too late.”

To his credit, Gillan - the holder - did manage to reset the ball after the initial bobble. But by then, the rhythm was gone and Koo’s foot was already in the turf. The mechanics were off, the timing was shot, and the play ended in a blooper that will likely be replayed for all the wrong reasons.

Even Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart couldn’t hide his reaction. ESPN’s cameras caught him on the sideline with a stunned look - the kind of expression that says, “Did that really just happen?” And honestly, it summed up the night.

This wasn’t just about one bad kick. It was another moment in a season that’s spiraled into dysfunction.

The Giants have now started three different quarterbacks. They’ve already parted ways with their head coach.

And now they’ve got a viral special teams mishap to add to the growing list of lowlights.

That’s seven straight losses for New York. Seven. And while the Commanders - their next opponent - have their own issues, the Giants haven’t shown much to suggest they’re ready to stop the bleeding.

There’s still time left in the season, but for the Giants, the focus might already be shifting to 2026. Because right now, it’s hard to find anything on the field that feels remotely stable.
