Denver Broncos GM George Paton is on the cusp of what many believe could be a well-deserved contract extension. As he enters the final year of his current deal, the anticipation is palpable.
Paton's journey with the Broncos has been a rollercoaster. Early on, he made some high-profile missteps, including hiring Nathaniel Hackett as head coach, which didn't pan out, and orchestrating a blockbuster trade for QB Russell Wilson that fell short of expectations.
However, Paton's prowess in the NFL Draft and free agency has been undeniable. Together with head coach Sean Payton, he steered the Broncos to a stellar 14-3 season, culminating in an appearance at the AFC Title Game.
Yet, despite the buzz, Paton hasn't inked a new deal just yet. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings, where Paton spent a significant part of his career, are on the hunt for a new GM. Speculation naturally swirled about a potential return, but ESPN’s Kevin Seifert put those rumors to rest, noting no evidence points to Paton or Rob Brzezinski being frontrunners for the Vikings' position.
“There are no indications that George Paton is on his way out in Denver or wants to leave," Seifert reports. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler echoed this sentiment, suggesting Paton is likely to stay put, with Broncos coach Sean Payton hopeful for an extension.
At the NFL annual meeting, Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner praised Paton, expressing a desire for him to remain with the team long-term. “We want to have George here long term.
He’s been a terrific partner for Sean and how they work together. I’m sure we’ll get that sorted out,” Penner stated.
The synergy between Paton and Payton is evident, with Paton's calm demeanor complementing Payton's intensity. Together, they've crafted a formidable team, and it seems only a matter of time before Broncos fans hear about Paton's extension. Despite the whispers, a return to Minnesota doesn't seem to be in the cards for Paton.
