Dre Greenlaw Rejoins 49ers After Rocky Season With Broncos

Dre Greenlaw reunites with the 49ers, aiming for redemption after a challenging stint with the Broncos.

The Denver Broncos' experiment with linebacker Dre Greenlaw didn't quite pan out, and now he's headed back to familiar territory with the San Francisco 49ers.

In the world of NFL transactions, one player's departure often paves the way for another's arrival. Such was the case with Greenlaw, who found himself returning to the 49ers just a day after being released by the Broncos.

Greenlaw's stint in Denver was far from memorable. He initially signed a three-year, $31.5 million deal, expected to be a force in the middle of the field.

However, injuries plagued his time with the team. A quad injury during offseason workouts and a hamstring issue in training camp kept him sidelined.

When he did play, a one-game suspension for an altercation with Bruce Allen didn't help his standing with coach Sean Payton.

The Broncos, who favor speedy linebackers for their pass-rushing schemes, found Greenlaw didn't quite fit their mold. Instead, former 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga stepped up, leading Denver to re-sign Justin Strnad and part ways with Greenlaw.

Meanwhile, the 49ers were ready to welcome Greenlaw back with open arms. San Francisco's GM John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan even traveled to Texas to persuade him to return. With Bryce Huff retiring at 28, Greenlaw's return comes at a crucial time for the 49ers.

Joining forces again with his close friend Fred Warner, Greenlaw aims to solidify San Francisco's linebacker unit, assuming he can stay healthy. Last season, Dee Winters anchored the position with 101 tackles and an interception over 17 starts. While Greenlaw's addition strengthens their linebacking depth, the 49ers will still be on the lookout for a new pass rusher to fill the void left by Huff's departure.
