Dre Greenlaw did not leave much room for interpretation on Sunday.
During the 49ers’ game against the Broncos, the San Francisco linebacker was caught on the sideline in a brief but blunt exchange with Denver head coach Sean Payton. A video shared by a 49ers fan account shows Greenlaw walking toward Payton’s area after a play and saying, “You f***ed up releasing me.” Payton’s response was short: “I know.”
It was a pointed moment from a player who has clearly not forgotten how things ended in Denver. Greenlaw spent the 2025 season with the Broncos after signing a multi-year deal, but injuries limited him to eight games before Denver released him after he lived “dark times.” He later returned to the 49ers on a one-year contract this offseason and has stepped back into a starting role next to Fred Warner.
The exchange came early in the game, and Greenlaw was on the field despite a quadriceps issue that had been listed earlier in the week. Through three games this season, he has 22 tackles and continues to play a major share of the defensive snaps.
Payton had recruited Greenlaw to Denver before the relationship ran its course, and Greenlaw has already made it clear that the stint was a difficult one for him. He has spoken previously about the injuries and the reduced role he dealt with while trying to recover.
For San Francisco, the game came with added pressure. The 49ers entered undefeated and were already missing Nick Bosa and other defensive pieces, so Greenlaw’s presence mattered even before the sideline moment went viral.
In the end, the words between Greenlaw and Payton said plenty about how that Denver chapter still sits with the linebacker. For one afternoon, he made sure his former coach heard it straight from him.

Broncos Leave Ugly Week 4 Loss With A Bigger Roster Concern
The Broncos came out of their Week 4 loss to the 49ers with more than another frustrating result on the ledger. The offense never found much rhythm in the first half, even as rookie back RJ Harvey provided one of the brighter spots with more than 100 all-purpose yards, and the defense again had trouble creating steady pressure.
Patrick Surtain II, Riley Moss and Pat Bryant all left the game with injuries and did not return, turning an ugly afternoon into a bigger roster concern as Denver tries to regroup. Losing that many key pieces in one game puts more pressure on a group already searching for answers, especially with the pass rush still not producing consistently. [Read more 🡒]
Broncos May Have Found A Backfield Answer In A Tough Loss
A tough loss to San Francisco did not keep RJ Harvey from giving the Broncos something to build on. The second-year running back was busy in every phase of the Week 4 game, handling carries, catching passes and even contributing in the return game, finishing with 157 all-purpose yards as Denver tried to keep pace before George Kittles late touchdown put the game away.
With Jonah Coleman on injured reserve and J.K. Dobbins still looking for a rhythm, Harveys workload could be headed in one direction. Denver may not have found the answer it wanted in the standings, but the way Harvey was used against the 49ers suggested the Broncos have at least one backfield option they can lean on as the season moves forward. Broncos Run Game Struggles Are Fueling One Obvious Trade Debate
The Broncos early-season offensive issues have been hard to ignore, and the run game has been right at the center of it. Through four games, Denver is averaging just 81.3 rushing yards per game, a number that has left the backfield looking far less dependable than the club would like as it tries to settle into the season.
That has helped fuel an obvious trade conversation, with Tony Pollard emerging as a name worth watching if the Titans decide to move him. Pollard has built a reputation for steady production, while J.K. Dobbins has seen his performance dip this season, leaving Denver with a familiar question: whether a proven runner could give the offense the spark it still seems to be missing. [Read more 🡒]
