The Denver Broncos have certainly kept fans on their toes this offseason. While many expected a splash in free agency, the team has opted to focus on retaining their core players, a strategy that helped them reach the AFC Championship game last season.
It's a calculated move, but one that has left some in Broncos Country feeling a bit underwhelmed. As we step into a new week, there's hope that the Broncos might look to bolster their roster with some outside talent.
Wide Receiver Options
The free agency market for wide receivers hasn't been particularly robust, with many top talents re-signing with their current teams. Despite this, the Broncos have a solid foundation with Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, and Pat Bryant returning. However, to truly elevate their passing game and give quarterback Bo Nix additional weapons, they need a reliable fifth option.
Three intriguing names that could fit the bill are Jauan Jennings, Stefon Diggs, and Deebo Samuel. Jennings brings toughness and versatility, traits that align well with Head Coach Sean Payton’s preferences.
The Broncos previously showed interest in Diggs and Samuel, so revisiting these options during the second wave of free agency could be a smart move. While Denver’s young receivers show promise, adding another proven playmaker could make a significant difference.
Filling the Gap Left by John Franklin-Myers
The departure of John Franklin-Myers has left a noticeable gap on the Broncos' defensive line. Fortunately, they have promising talent in Sai’vion Jones and Eyioma Uwazurike, who will likely step up to fill the void. However, adding a seasoned veteran could provide stability and experience.
Enter Cam Jordan, the ever-reliable defensive end with ties to Payton. At 37, Jordan remains a force, having recorded 10.5 sacks last season.
A one-year deal could be mutually beneficial, offering the Broncos a proven performer while allowing Jordan another shot at a Super Bowl run. Another veteran option is Calais Campbell, whose leadership and experience could be invaluable, though his age raises questions about his current impact.
Tight End Considerations
The Broncos have retained their tight end group from last season, despite it being one of the least productive in the league. With Davis Webb calling plays, there’s hope for improved output, but adding more talent remains a priority.
Dallas Goedert is off the table after re-signing with the Eagles, leaving David Njoku as a potential target. Njoku’s recent season was marred by injuries, limiting his production.
However, a low-risk, one-year contract might be a worthwhile gamble. If the Broncos pass on Njoku, they could look to the 2026 NFL Draft to find a promising tight end to enhance their offense.
As the Broncos navigate this offseason, their strategy of balancing continuity with potential new additions will be crucial in shaping their prospects for the upcoming season.
