Courtland Sutton Is Closing In On A Broncos Milestone With Extra Meaning

Courtland Sutton is on the brink of tying a historic Broncos record in a game filled with family ties and football legends.

Courtland Sutton is on the verge of joining a Broncos receiving landmark Sunday, and the matchup gives the moment a neat twist.

Sutton needs one catch against the San Francisco 49ers to tie Ed McCaffrey for fifth place in franchise history with 462 receptions, according to Sports Illustrated. If he gets two, he would pass McCaffrey outright and move into sole possession of fifth.

The wrinkle, of course, is who will be across from him. McCaffrey’s son, Christian McCaffrey, is a star running back for the 49ers.

Sutton enters the game with 461 catches, 6,439 receiving yards and 39 touchdowns in nine seasons with Denver. The Broncos’ all-time receiving leaderboard still has plenty of distance ahead of him, with Rod Smith leading the way at 849 receptions, followed by Shannon Sharpe at 675 and Demaryius Thomas at 665. Lionel Taylor sits just ahead of Sutton for the next spot on the list with 543.

The veteran wideout hasn’t piled up his usual numbers through the first three games, posting eight receptions for 82 yards and no touchdowns. But he was more active in Denver’s 30-26 comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams, when he caught three passes for a season-high 46 yards.

That kind of involvement could matter again Sunday. Denver is 2-1 after back-to-back comeback wins and now faces an undefeated San Francisco team that is 3-0, so the Broncos are heading into another early-season test.

Sutton isn’t the only Bronco with a milestone in reach. Bo Nix needs 123 passing yards to tie Kyle Orton for seventh in franchise history.

Nik Bonitto is two sacks away from 40 for his career. Zach Allen can become the first Broncos defensive lineman since Derek Wolfe in 2016 to open a season with four sacks through the first four games.

Still, Sutton’s chase stands out from the rest. His next catch could put him next to one of the most productive receivers in Broncos history, and it would happen with Ed McCaffrey’s son on the other sideline.

Broncos Niners Preview Turned Into An Unexpected Live TV Moment

Sundays FOX NFL Sunday pregame show had its usual Broncos-49ers preview rhythm until Terry Bradshaw briefly turned the set into a cleanup scene. While talking through the matchup, Bradshaw accidentally knocked over a cup of coffee, creating a live-TV moment that viewers saw unfold in real time.

Curt Menefee moved in to handle the spill, and Bradshaw kept right on with the analysis without missing a beat. It was a reminder that even on a polished studio show, the most memorable moments can come from the kind of unscripted mishap no one sees coming. [Read more 🡒]

Broncos Rookie Jahfari Harvey Just Hit An Important Early Step

Jahfari Harvey is taking an important first step in his early Broncos journey, and for a rookie outside linebacker, that usually means proving he can absorb the details before anything else. Harvey confirmed he has been signed to the practice squad and is currently working on the scout team while learning the playbook, a familiar but meaningful stage for a young defender trying to earn a longer look in Denver.

For a team that is constantly balancing development with immediate needs, getting a rookie into the building and into the system matters. Harveys focus now is on the daily grind of practice work and installation, the kind of behind-the-scenes progress that does not show up on game day but can determine whether a player is ready when the next opportunity arrives. Broncos Catch A Timely Edge Against Banged Up 49ers

The Broncos head into Week 4 with something every team wants this time of year: a cleaner bill of health than the opponent across the field. Marvin Mims Jr. and Jaylen Waddle were full participants all week, giving Denver a healthier look as it prepares to face a San Francisco defense that is already dealing with several key injuries and a long list of players on injured reserve.

Nick Bosa and James Thompson Jr. are among the 49ers who have been out or questionable, which leaves Denver in position to try to press an edge before the game even kicks off. The Broncos are also set to elevate practice squad defender Johnny Walker to help cover for injured Dondrea Tillman, a small but telling roster move that underscores how much both sides are managing before this matchup.
