The NFL’s opening week didn’t just start with a bang - it matched a record.
By the time Monday night wrapped up, all 16 teams had piled up 791 points, tying the highest-scoring Week 1 in league history. The Chiefs’ fourth touchdown of the night pushed Kansas City ahead 31-10 early in the fourth quarter against Denver, but the scoring dried up after that, leaving the record untouched at the top line and not alone.
That total ties the mark set in Week 1 of the 2012 season, when NFL teams also combined for 791 points. That 2012 number had already topped the previous record of 788.
The biggest lift came on Sunday, when the games turned into a full-on offensive showcase. Teams playing that day combined for 693 points, the most ever in a Week 1 Sunday. The early-week slate was more modest by comparison, with Wednesday, Thursday and Monday producing more restrained scoring before Sunday blew the roof off the record chase.
The weekend’s wildest result made sure the league had a shot at the record in the first place. The Bears’ 59-37 win over the Panthers produced 96 points, easily the highest-scoring game of the week. No other matchup got close, with the next-highest total coming in at 67 points from the Bills’ 36-31 win over the Texans.
From there, the scoring stayed hot. Six games finished with at least 60 total points, and 11 teams scored 30 or more. Only one game landed below 33 points, and that was the season opener between the Seahawks and Patriots, a 13-10 Seahawks win.

One notable wrinkle: this year’s record-tying week looked a little different from 2012. Only two teams topped 40 points this time, compared with five teams doing it in the previous record year. Even so, the Bears’ 59-point eruption stood as the biggest individual team total in a Week 1 game since 2012, when the Jets led the week with 48 points.
