The Chargers are turning their attention to a rising defensive mind in the coaching ranks, requesting an interview with Broncos assistant head coach and defensive passing game coordinator Jim Leonhard for their vacant defensive coordinator role, according to Ian Rapoport.
Leonhard’s name has been circulating in coaching circles for a while now, and it's easy to see why. Before joining Denver’s staff, he was on the radar in Green Bay for their DC job-interest that ultimately ended with the Packers hiring Jonathan Gannon.
Now, with the Chargers searching for a new defensive identity, Leonhard is firmly in the mix. He’s also considered a strong candidate to take over the Bills’ defense under newly promoted head coach Joe Brady.
At 43, Leonhard brings a compelling blend of NFL experience and collegiate success. He played 10 seasons in the league as a safety, suiting up for six teams: the Bills, Ravens, Jets, Broncos, Saints, and Browns. That on-field experience has translated well to the sidelines.
Leonhard began his coaching journey at Wisconsin in 2016 as the defensive backs coach. Just a year later, he was promoted to defensive coordinator-a move that paid off quickly.
His defenses became known for their discipline, toughness, and ability to generate takeaways. When Wisconsin needed a steady hand in 2022, Leonhard stepped in as interim head coach and guided the Badgers to a 5-3 finish.
After his stint at Wisconsin, Leonhard joined the Illinois staff in 2023 before landing in Denver in 2024 as the Broncos’ secondary coach. His impact was felt immediately, and by 2025, he had earned a promotion to assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator-a clear sign of how highly he’s regarded within the organization.
Now, with multiple NFL teams eyeing him for a defensive coordinator role, Leonhard’s next move could be a pivotal one. Whether it’s Los Angeles, Buffalo, or somewhere else, he’s positioned to take the next step in what’s becoming an impressive coaching trajectory.
