Jarrett Stidham is back in the starting role this Sunday, set to lead the Broncos against the Patriots in what will be his first start since 2023. It’s a notable moment for the 29-year-old quarterback - not just because he’s back under center, but because he’ll be facing a familiar face across the field: Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
There’s history here. McDaniels was the one calling plays in New England when the Patriots drafted Stidham in the fourth round back in 2019.
Then, during his stint as head coach of the Raiders, McDaniels brought Stidham to Las Vegas in 2022 to back up Derek Carr. When Carr was benched late that season, it was Stidham who got the nod - making the first two starts of his NFL career under McDaniels’ watch.
Now, a few seasons and a change of scenery later, Stidham is in Denver, getting another shot to prove himself. And if anyone knows what he brings to the table, it’s McDaniels.
“Smart, accurate, great human being,” McDaniels said when asked about Stidham during his Thursday press conference. “Worked hard, great teammate.
Just hadn’t had an opportunity, based on the situations and those kinds of things. But, just enjoyed working with him, enjoyed my time with him.
He’ll be ready to go this week, for sure.”
That last line - “He’ll be ready to go” - feels less like coach-speak and more like a genuine endorsement. McDaniels has seen Stidham up close, in practice and in games, and he knows what the quarterback is capable of when given the chance.
Stidham’s career numbers won’t jump off the page - 197 pass attempts, 59.4% completion rate, 1,422 yards, eight touchdowns, eight interceptions - but context matters. He’s never had a full season to develop as a starter. What he has shown, especially in those late-season starts with the Raiders, is a willingness to push the ball downfield and a poise that suggests there’s more to unlock.
Sunday’s matchup offers more than just a reunion storyline. It’s a real opportunity for Stidham to show what he can do with the reins in his hands again. And for the Broncos, it’s a chance to evaluate a player who’s been waiting patiently for another shot.
There’s familiarity, there’s mutual respect, and now, there’s a game that might just give us a clearer picture of who Jarrett Stidham is - and who he still might become.
