Broncos Bank on J.K. Dobbins' Return Amid Injury Concerns
In the world of the NFL, the Denver Broncos made a bold move by re-signing running back J.K. Dobbins.
While his talent is undeniable, his history of injuries is the elephant in the room that can't be ignored. Dobbins' career has been marred by a series of setbacks, starting with a torn ACL in the 2021 preseason while with the Ravens.
Since then, he's spent more time on injured reserve than on the field.
Despite these challenges, when Dobbins is healthy, he ranks among the league's most effective running backs. But his struggle has been staying healthy.
Broncos GM George Paton is well aware of this balance. "He’s 27 and completely healthy now," Paton noted, acknowledging the injury history while expressing confidence in Dobbins' current condition.
Last season's Lisfranc injury, caused by a hip-drop tackle, was reviewed by the league and deemed not fine-worthy. Paton emphasized that this was a freak accident, not a breakdown of Dobbins' body. "He could have played in the Super Bowl," Paton asserted, highlighting the team's cautious decision to hold him out of the AFC Championship Game, which ended in a snowy 10-7 loss.
Beyond the physical, Dobbins has made a significant impact on the Broncos' culture. Paton praised him, saying, "From the minute he walked in our building, he changed it."
His influence was so profound that the team couldn't imagine letting him leave. Dobbins was a top-four rusher when injured, making his return a priority for the Broncos.
While the Broncos are always on the lookout for new talent, especially in the running back department, Paton expressed confidence in their current lineup. With Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie re-signed, the Broncos maintain a solid core. Paton also highlighted RJ Harvey's growth, noting his 12 touchdowns and explosive plays as a receiver.
"We’re always looking," Paton stated, indicating the team's ongoing search for talent through the draft and beyond. Yet, he remains optimistic about their current roster, recalling that last year they managed without Dobbins and Harvey and still felt secure.
The hope now is for Dobbins to remain healthy and continue to contribute both on and off the field. If he can stay fit, the Broncos might just have the catalyst they need for a successful season.
