Patrick Mahomes is finally set to take the field again Monday night, but the Chiefs’ plan for easing him back just took a hit.
Kansas City has ruled out starting left tackle Josh Simmons for the opener against Denver, a development that had been building all week before the official decision. That puts Kahlil Benson, an undrafted rookie, in line to start at left tackle in his first NFL game - and his assignment could hardly be tougher. He’ll be stationed on Mahomes’ blind side against a Denver pass rush led by Nik Bonitto, who has piled up 27.5 sacks since 2024.
Benson arrived in Kansas City after going unselected in this year’s draft, then signing with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. He started 12 games at right tackle for national champion Indiana last season, and most of his college work - along with this preseason - came on the right side. Now the Chiefs are asking him to flip to the opposite edge and handle one of the league’s most dangerous rushers right away.
Simmons’ absence comes after a back injury that has kept him out of practice since mid-August. The Ohio State product also missed nine games last season, first because of a personal family matter and later due to a wrist injury that ended his year on injured reserve.
That uncertainty has understandably drawn attention, especially with Mahomes coming off the torn ACL and LCL that ended his 2025 season in December. Some fans and analysts have questioned the risk of putting the quarterback behind a reshuffled front, and teammates had already voiced concerns during camp drills about protecting Mahomes’ surgically repaired knee.
Still, Andy Reid has stayed steady on Benson. “He’s done a nice job for us,” Reid said Thursday.
“He’s obviously shown us that he has the ability to play. We wouldn’t put him in there if we didn’t think that.”
Mahomes backed that view when asked about trusting a less experienced lineman as he returns from injury. “I’ve got trust in anyone that the coaches put out there because I know that they’ve worked their tail off to be at that spot,” he said.
The opener also gives Mahomes a chance to respond after slipping to No. 18 on the NFL’s Top 100 player rankings this offseason. And Denver won’t exactly be easing him in, either, with the Broncos entering as the reigning AFC West champion. How Benson handles the left edge could end up shaping just how smooth Kansas City’s season start really is.
