The Broncos’ center situation got even more precarious on Tuesday.
Michael Deiter, already in line to handle the position with Luke Wattenberg and Alex Forsyth both banged up, was carted off during training camp practice after an apparent injury in 9-on-7 drills. He did not come back, and veteran lineman Calvin Throckmorton took over at center.
Sean Payton did not offer an immediate update on Deiter, leaving the veteran’s status in evaluation mode as the Broncos wait to learn how serious the injury is.
Deiter’s path to this point has been a winding one. The former Dolphins third-round pick is entering his second season in Denver after first landing on the Broncos’ practice squad in January and later signing a reserve/future contract. The 30-year-old in September previously spent time with Miami, Houston and Washington.
His injury lands at a bad time for a unit already running short. Wattenberg and Forsyth were both working off to the side during Tuesday’s session, which left Deiter as the Broncos’ third option at center. When he went down, Throckmorton - more naturally a guard - was pushed into the middle for the rest of practice, and that setup is expected to carry into Wednesday as well.
The Broncos have been piling up injuries since camp opened. Along with Wattenberg and Forsyth, the list includes wide receivers Jaylen Waddle and Marvin Mims, plus defensive lineman Matt Henningsen, who suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon last week.
Payton addressed the broader run of injuries on Monday and said, “I don’t think it’s heat-related as much as you always try to look at your pre-practice routine, your hydration, obviously. It’s incumbent on the player," Payton said of the injury epidemic on Monday.
"It’s hard for anyone to know your soft tissue. So I’m always looking at, all right, what did we do leading up to maybe a period where someone had a strain?
We had a warm-down after practice, and we’ll continue to focus on it, though.”
If Denver needs another emergency option at center, Gavin Ortega is in the mix, though the undrafted rookie sailed an errant snap on Monday. Quinn Meinerz also has some center experience, including some last preseason, and he said he’s ready if the Broncos need him there.
“I gotta have it in the back pocket," Meinerz told reporters. "I know that it's important I add that value to the offensive line room, in an emergency situation.”
