Broncos Suddenly Face A Depth Test They Didnt Want

As the Denver Broncos navigate roster challenges ahead of their upcoming game, the strategic decision to place rookie running back Jonah Coleman on injured reserve could have significant implications for the teams lineup and future roster moves.

The Broncos spent Saturday shuffling the bottom of the roster, and the moves tell you plenty about how they’re trying to survive the next stretch.

Denver placed rookie running back Jonah Coleman on injured reserve, according to the NFL wire, then signed long snapper Mitchell Fraboni to the active roster after two weeks of practice-squad elevations. The Broncos also elevated fullback Adam Prentice and rookie wide receiver/returner Kolbe Katsis for Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams.

Fraboni’s move was coming sooner rather than later. He had already been elevated for each of Denver’s first two games, and once he landed on the 53-man roster, the Broncos could keep their special teams operation intact without burning another elevation.

Prentice, though, is in a different spot. This is his third elevation of the season, which means Denver will need to sign him to the active roster after Sunday’s game or waive him and hope he clears before bringing him back to the practice squad.

Katsis’ elevation matters too, especially with Marvin Mims Jr. listed as questionable because of the same foot injury that kept him out in Week 2. At minimum, Denver now has a return option for punts and kickoffs. If Mims is able to suit up against the Rams, the Broncos could have two dangerous kickoff returners available, and the staff can decide how much punt-return work to ask of him if he’s still not fully right.

Coleman’s injury is not a season-ender. He sprained his ankle early in the Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he stayed in the game and took on a much bigger load after J.K.

Dobbins went out with a hip injury and did not return in the second half. Coleman finished the job for Denver, including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter - the first score of his career - plus several important runs to help close out the win.

The rookie now has to miss at least four games on injured reserve before he can be activated, which gives him time to heal and gives Denver a little breathing room to sort out the numbers. The Broncos may not have needed to use that roster spot on Coleman if Fraboni’s practice-squad elevations weren’t about to run out, but once Coleman got hurt, the decision became a practical one.

There’s still more roster juggling ahead. Denver is unlikely to risk losing Prentice on waivers, so someone will probably have to come off the 53-man roster on Monday. Tycen Anderson and Lil'Jordan Humphrey are the names most likely to be in the mix.

And when Coleman’s four weeks are up, the Broncos will have to clear another spot for him again. They’re going to want him back, too.

It’s a short-term IR gamble, especially with both Dobbins and RJ Harvey already having missed time this season because of injuries. Both are healthy going into Week 3, but Denver’s hoping that lasts until Coleman is eligible to return in Week 7.

For Fraboni, this was always heading toward a permanent promotion. Every team needs a kicker, a punter, and a long snapper, and the practice-squad elevation system only stretches so far.

Prentice should be on the active roster early next week, and Katsis now gets a chance to show the return ability he flashed in training camp and the preseason against the Rams.

Tim Tebow Faces Serious Questions As Off-Field Controversy Grows

Tim Tebow is dealing with a very different kind of spotlight these days, one tied not to football but to his off-field work. The former Broncos quarterback has been connected to Life Surge, the Christian group now facing allegations that it pressured people into expensive financial advice programs that offered little in return. Tebow has said he is taking the claims seriously and is stepping back from his involvement while an investigation plays out.

Life Surge has denied the allegations, and Tebow has been a featured speaker at multiple events for the organization in recent years. For a public figure who has long blended faith, charity and celebrity, the situation adds another layer of scrutiny to a profile that has often drawn attention well beyond the game. For now, the central question is how far this controversy reaches and what it means for the relationship he had built with the group. [Read more 🡒]

Broncos Lose Promising Rookie Back Just As His Role Was Growing

Jonah Colemans role in Denver was starting to grow at just the right time, and the rookie running back had shown enough against Jacksonville to suggest the Broncos had found a useful piece in their backfield rotation. He played through the game despite a high-ankle sprain, finishing with 39 rushing yards, a touchdown and three catches, the kind of all-purpose effort that usually earns a young player more trust in the weeks ahead.

Instead, the Broncos will have to navigate the next stretch without him after placing Coleman on short-term injured reserve. The timetable points to a return in late October against the Arizona Cardinals, which gives Denver a clear target while leaving the backfield picture a little thinner in the meantime. [Read more 🡒]

Broncos Suddenly Face A Bigger Davante Adams Problem

Puka Nacuas soft tissue injury has already changed the shape of the Rams passing game, and it leaves Denver preparing for a heavier Davante Adams workload than it likely would have seen otherwise. Adams has been more productive when Nacua is off the field, which gives Sean Paytons defense a different kind of problem to solve heading into the matchup.

The Broncos are expected to answer with Pat Surtain II shadowing Adams and by trying to make life uncomfortable for Matthew Stafford, whose mobility remains limited. Even so, the chess match can turn quickly if Adams starts finding room early, because Denvers game plan depends on keeping Stafford under pressure while limiting the one receiver the Rams can lean on most in this setup.
