Broncos Steer Clear of Free Agent After Costly Past Mistakes

Despite their past free agency blunders, the Broncos should steer clear of Alec Pierce's projected $81 million deal to avoid another costly misstep.

The Denver Broncos have had their share of ups and downs in free agency, much like any NFL team. The Russell Wilson trade back in 2022 stands out as a particularly tough moment in their history.

But when it comes to signing players, they've had their misses too, like the Randy Gregory deal. Despite these setbacks, the Broncos have also made some stellar moves, bringing in talents like Zach Allen and Talanoa Hufanga.

As another offseason unfolds, Denver is poised to make strategic decisions in free agency. However, not every available player is a fit for the Broncos, especially when considering financial implications. One such case is Alec Pierce, a wide receiver whose market value is pegged at nearly $81 million over four years-an investment that seems ill-advised for Denver.

Pierce has made a name for himself with his ability to stretch the field, leading the NFL in yards per reception for the past two seasons. Yet, his game is somewhat limited beyond that.

While he excels in getting downfield and blocking, he's not the top-tier receiver the Broncos need. In 2024, Pierce recorded 47 catches for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns, numbers that suggest he's more of a high-end number two receiver, similar to Courtland Sutton.

Pierce's career catch rate of 53 percent and his 'boom or bust' performances in 2025-where he had only two games with over 100 receiving yards-highlight his inconsistency. The Broncos need to aim higher, potentially targeting players like AJ Brown or Jaylen Waddle, who could offer a more dynamic presence.

While Pierce might be a better fit for a team like the New England Patriots, who could use a deep threat, his potential contract mirrors Sutton's current deal. Given the tendency for players to be overpaid in free agency, the Broncos have plenty of reasons-81 million, to be exact-to steer clear of Pierce this offseason.
