Broncos Reunite With Two Key Players in Unexpected Roster Move

Broncos strategically re-sign Henningsen and Krull at reduced cap figures, strengthening the team's roster for the upcoming season.

The Broncos have made some strategic moves, re-signing defensive end Matt Henningsen and tight end Lucas Krull after initially declining to issue restricted-free-agent tenders. This decision, first reported by Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette, allows the team to keep both players at a reduced cap figure, which is a savvy financial maneuver.

For the Broncos, these re-signings are a win-win. They get to maintain roster depth without the hefty $3.52 million RFA tender, while Henningsen and Krull secure some guaranteed money, a rarity outside of the tender.

Lucas Krull, who’s been part of the main roster for the past two seasons, faced a challenging 2024 season without a touchdown in 13 games. However, he bounced back with an impressive training camp after the team brought in Evan Engram.

Krull's perseverance paid off as he made the 53-player roster, starting three games and recording two catches for 15 yards before a foot fracture in practice sidelined him. He returned to practice during the postseason but wasn’t activated for the playoff games.

On the other hand, Matt Henningsen, a 2022 draft pick from Wisconsin, has been with the Broncos through ups and downs. He played 34 games in his first two seasons, recording 40 tackles and a sack.

After spending 2024 on the practice squad, he missed 2025 due to an Achilles injury sustained during a joint practice with the 49ers. As he recovers, Henningsen is set to compete for a spot on the defensive line, especially with John Franklin-Myers no longer in the mix.

These moves suggest the Broncos are focused on maintaining continuity and depth, setting the stage for competition in the upcoming season. With these re-signings, they have a solid foundation to build upon as they look toward the future.
