Jaylen Waddle’s status is the big Broncos question heading into Sunday’s Week 8 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Denver wideout has been dealing with a chest injury since Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks. He didn’t carry an injury designation in Week 7 against the Arizona Cardinals, but the issue flared up again after he was tackled on a reverse play, and he was limited in practice this week leading into the Chiefs game.
Denver has officially listed Waddle as questionable.
Jaylen Waddle (chest) listed questionable for Week 8.
Earlier in the week, Broncos report Mike Klis said the team was hopeful Waddle would be able to go in what’s shaping up as a major AFC West showdown. A win would push Denver into first place in the division.
The matchup also sets up as a potentially favorable one for the Broncos passing game. Kansas City has ruled out rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane, and the Chiefs also placed L'Jarius Sneed on injured reserve. Even so, Waddle didn’t do much against Kansas City in Week 1, finishing with just one catch.
Through seven games, Waddle has been targeted 45 times by Bo Nix, turning those looks into 26 receptions for 276 yards and one touchdown. He’s also caught a 2-point conversion. The production hasn’t matched expectations, and Denver’s offense has struggled overall with Nix taking a step back from his 2025 form.
If Waddle is active, the betting market is thin. Because of the questionable tag, sportsbooks have only posted touchdown props for him in Week 8, which leaves fewer angles to attack. Still, with Kansas City shorthanded on the back end, the touchdown play is the one that stands out.
Waddle has only one score this season, but he has been on the field for 66.2 percent of Denver’s snaps, and the expectation is that he would be a featured part of the game plan if he suits up.
The concern, of course, is the injury itself. Waddle has aggravated the chest issue in back-to-back weeks, and that makes him a risky play even in a matchup that looks inviting on paper.

Broncos Have One Overlooked Edge That Could Decide Chiefs Game
Special teams rarely get the headline billing in a Broncos-Chiefs matchup, but they can swing a game that figures to be tight in the margins. Denver enters with Wil Lutz giving it steady production on field goals, and the Broncos also appear to have an edge in the kicking and field-position battle thanks to Jeremy Crawshaw and Marvin Mims Jr., two pieces that can quietly change how the game is played.
Kansas City still has leg power with Matt Araiza, but the Broncos overall profile on special teams looks cleaner heading into the showdown. If Denver can keep winning the hidden-yardage fight, it could put extra pressure on an offense that may not get many easy possessions, and it could turn one of the leagues most familiar rivalry games into a field-position contest. Broncos Still Have A Real AFC West Opening Even If Sunday Hurts
The Broncos have spent the past month living with little margin for error, and Sundays Week 8 matchup carries the kind of weight that can change the shape of their season. Denver has already taken two losses since Week 4, but the broader picture still looks workable, especially with a schedule that should give Sean Paytons team chances to steady itself if it can avoid letting one setback turn into a slide.
Kansas City remains the standard in the AFC West, but the Chiefs do not have a clean path either, and that matters for a Broncos team trying to hang around in the division race. Denver has also shown under Payton that it can usually answer losses the right way, which is why this game feels less like a season-defining final judgment and more like another test of whether the Broncos can keep the door open. Broncos Have A Real Chance To Make Week 8 A Statement Vs Chiefs
The Broncos have spent enough time around this matchup to know it carries a little extra weight, especially at home, where Denver has been able to make things uncomfortable for Kansas City during the Sean Payton era. With Week 8 approaching, the conversation is less about chasing a perfect formula and more about whether the Broncos can lean into the parts of their roster that have traveled well against a division rival that has not looked quite as airtight as usual.
Jonah Coleman has given Denver another layer to work with in the offense, and his presence has helped shape the kind of balance the Broncos will need if they want to turn this into more than just a competitive showing. The Chiefs still bring the usual challenge, but the gap feels narrower than it has in some past meetings, which is why this game has the feel of a real opportunity for Denver to make a statement without fully revealing yet how far that edge can go.
