The Broncos may have found a setup that works beautifully for Bo Nix, but it could also create a problem they’d rather not think about yet: Davis Webb might not be around for long.
Denver’s two biggest offseason moves were bringing in wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and handing Webb the offensive coordinator title along with play-calling duties. Both decisions were made with Nix front and center, and early returns have been promising. Waddle already hooked up with Nix on a big play in the Broncos’ Week 2 preseason loss, while Webb has been putting together long touchdown drives.
There’s a clear sense that Denver is trying to modernize the offense, and the result could be one of the most explosive seasons the Broncos have had in years in 2026. But if that happens, Webb’s stock may rise fast enough to make him a target for other teams.
That possibility isn’t far-fetched. Webb was in the mix for head coaching jobs this offseason before choosing to stay in Denver, which tells you he’s already on the radar. At 31, he fits the mold that NFL teams keep chasing: young, offensive-minded, and linked to a productive system.
The league’s fascination with that profile really took off in 2017, when the Los Angeles Rams hired Sean McVay as head coach. McVay was 30 at the time, becoming the youngest head coach in the modern era and holding that distinction for years. Even now, at 40, he remains younger than most NFL coaches despite approaching year 10 on the job.
Teams have kept trying to copy that formula, though the Broncos have seen how badly it can go wrong. Their own attempt came in 2022 with Nathaniel Hackett, and it did not work out.
Webb would be a much different kind of bet if he puts together a strong 2026. He’d be a near-perfect “McVay clone,” and Denver’s coaching staff has already seen assistants move on for promotions over the last few seasons. There’s always the chance he follows the path Ben Johnson took and stays put a little longer, but there’s also a real chance he wants a team of his own.
Sean Payton’s recent contract extension makes it less likely Denver will be dealing with a head coach change anytime soon, but that doesn’t eliminate the concern. For now, this is only something to keep in mind. If Webb turns the Broncos into a quick, efficient, explosive offense, he could talk his way into a head coaching job - and out of Denver.

J.K. Dobbins sat out the Broncos preseason matchup with the Packers after a minor soft-tissue injury in training camp, leaving Sean Payton to navigate the backfield without one of the biggest offseason additions. In Dobbins absence, Denver leaned on its other runners, with RJ Harvey getting the start and also adding a touchdown catch to help carry the workload.
Payton said Dobbins could be in line to make his debut in the final preseason game against the Vikings, which gives Denver at least one more chance to see how the backfield pieces fit before the games start to count.
