The Broncos keep finding new ways to make September feel like a roller coaster, and Sunday night was no exception. Denver stared at a shutout through the first half, then ripped off 30 points on the way to a dramatic comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. That moved the Broncos to 2-1 and sent them into a stretch of three winnable games against the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers and Seattle Seahawks.
The biggest reason Denver walked out with the win was the defense, and Talanoa Hufanga was right at the center of it. After dropping countless interceptions during his first year with the Broncos in the 2025 NFL Season, he finally cashed in twice in Week 3.
One pick became a pick-six. The other closed the door.
For a player who had been stuck on the edge of those plays for so long, the timing could not have been better.
Bo Nix also earned his place on the winners list, even with a tipped interception on the stat sheet. Outside of that, he settled in and delivered three touchdowns in all, including two passing scores and the game-winning rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak.
Once again, he came through when the game was tight late. At this point, it’s becoming a pattern.
Nix and the Broncos are now 16-4 since the start of the 2025 season.
Sean Payton gets credit too, because this is the first time in his Broncos tenure that the team has finished September with a winning record. Denver went 2-2 in September in 2025, 2-2 in 2024 and 0-3 in 2023, so this was a meaningful step in avoiding the early-season hole that has followed the team in recent years. Beating Los Angeles and Jacksonville only adds to the value of the month.
There were also a couple of irritants mixed into the night. Jaylen Waddle managed just two catches for 10 yards on seven targets, though he did add a 14-yard rush.
After his breakout showing in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, this was a major drop-off. The speed is still enough to force defenses to pay attention, but the production disappeared fast.
Wil Lutz also had one he’d like back. He missed a field goal that clanged off the upright, and it nearly became the swing point in the game. Lutz has been dependable overall for Denver, especially from shorter range, but this was one of those misses that stands out because of how close the finish was.
In the end, Denver’s late surge told the whole story. A team that did nothing in the first half somehow finished with 30 points and another home comeback. That kind of closing kick has become part of the Broncos’ identity, and it’s hard to ignore how often it shows up when the game is on the line.
