The Broncos found their comeback gear again, and this time it came with the AFC West lead attached.
Denver erased a fourth-quarter deficit and outlasted Kansas City 28-24 in a game that swung back and forth all afternoon before ending with a goal-line stand and a sack that slammed the door on Patrick Mahomes. Rookie running back Jonah Coleman delivered the biggest punch on the final drive, first with a 51-yard catch-and-run and then with a five-yard touchdown that put the Broncos ahead for good.
It started with Denver striking first on a 39-yard Wil Lutz field goal, but Kansas City answered with a touchdown pass from Mahomes to Rashee Rice from 11 yards out. The Broncos kept hanging around, cutting into the lead when Bo Nix connected with Courtland Sutton on a 23-yard pass to set up another Lutz field goal, this one from 45 yards.
Kansas City then opened things up with a pair of explosive plays from rookie running back Emmett Johnson. First came a 73-yard score on a soft toss over coverage from Mahomes, then later a 33-yard catch-and-run that helped set up a 45-yard Harrison Butker field goal. By halftime, the Chiefs were up 17-13.
The third quarter pushed the margin further in Kansas City’s favor. Mahomes guided an 11-play, 63-yard march that ended with a four-yard touchdown to tight end Noah Gray, and suddenly the Broncos were staring at a 24-13 hole. Denver’s offense had gone quiet by then, going three-and-out three times in the quarter without a first down.
Then the fourth quarter changed everything.
Nix finally got Denver moving on a drive the Broncos had to have, and the finish came on a two-yard rollout throw to tight end Nate Adkins after Adam Trautman helped spark the possession with a big catch. Denver added a two-point conversion pass to Waddle to pull within 24-21.
After Butker missed a 54-yard field goal, the Broncos had their opening. Nix found Coleman for the huge 51-yard gain, then Coleman finished the job from five yards out to flip the score to 28-24.
Kansas City still had one last shot, the kind Mahomes usually turns into a dagger. This time, Denver’s defense held firm. Malcolm Roach got to Mahomes on fourth-and-goal, and the Broncos walked away with the win.
The result pushed Denver to 6-2 and into first place in the AFC West. Kansas City dropped to 5-2 and suffered its second straight loss.

Russell Wilson Just Reignited Broncos Fans Sean Payton Debate
Russell Wilsons move into broadcasting has already given Broncos fans a fresh angle on a relationship that never quite settled down in Denver. After leaving the Broncos, where his tenure was defined in part by a rocky dynamic with Sean Payton, Wilson has started his media career this NFL season and has been using his new platform to stay visible around the league.
The latest reminder came on CBS Sports, where Wilson made a light-hearted comment about Payton that was enough to stir up old feelings among Broncos followers. Wilson chose to retire from playing rather than continue as a backup quarterback, and with both men now in different lanes, the debate over how their partnership ended is still lingering in the background. Andy Reids Frustration Says Everything About Broncos AFC West Win
The Broncos AFC West win came with a familiar dose of late-game Chiefs frustration, and Andy Reid made clear afterward that he was not pleased with the call that helped swing the outcome. In a tight finish against Denver, a false start penalty wiped out what would have been a game-winning touchdown for Kansas City, turning a potential celebration into a 28-24 loss that mattered in the divisional race.
Reid publicly disagreed with the officials ruling and said he did not see a false start on the play, a reaction that only added to the sense that the Chiefs felt one crucial snap had gone against them. For Denver, though, the result was the only thing that mattered, and a call that Kansas City will keep talking about became part of a win that could carry real weight in the AFC West. [Read more 🡒]
Broncos Just Made The AFC West Feel Very Different
The Broncos left Arrowhead with more than a win, they left with a different feel around the AFC West. Denver rallied from a fourth-quarter hole to beat Kansas City 28-24, and the comeback had the kind of ingredients that can change a division race fast: Bo Nix steering two touchdown drives, a defense that kept the Chiefs ground game in check, and a young offense finding just enough burst when it mattered most.
Jonah Coleman finished the job with the game-winning touchdown run, while Kansas City rookie Emmett Johnson provided some of the explosive moments that kept Denver on edge. For the Broncos, the result also adds another layer to a backfield conversation that is already getting attention ahead of the trade deadline, with the team reportedly considering running back additions as it looks to build on a statement win.
