The Broncos just caught a significant break ahead of their Week 3 Sunday Night Football matchup with the Rams.
Myles Garrett, the standout defensive end the Rams acquired in a trade earlier this offseason, is headed to injured reserve and will need knee surgery. That means he’ll be out at least a month, knocking him out for games against the New York Giants, Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, and Buffalo Bills.

Denver won’t have to deal with Garrett on September 27th, and that changes the shape of the matchup. Even if the Rams still have one of the sturdier defensive lines in football, losing Garrett takes a real edge off that group. Aaron Donald is also likely to be eased back into game reps, so the Rams may not have their newly unretired defensive tackle at full strength either.
That should make life easier for Bo Nix and the Broncos’ passing game. With so much attention on Denver’s air attack this offseason, this could be a spot where it starts to look like a real strength. But the bigger priority is the same one that has to show up in every game: the run.
Denver has to be able to establish the ground game, especially against a team like the Rams. Their offense ranked 1st in points scored per game last year, and Matthew Stafford is the reigning MVP, which means the Broncos need to keep him on the sideline and string together drives. Even at home, that’s the formula if Denver wants to control this one.
