Broncos Jump To No 5 After Blockbuster Trade

The Denver Broncos' strategic offseason moves, highlighted by the high-stakes trade for Jaylen Waddle, position them as a top contender in the NFL according to ESPN.

The Denver Broncos were cruising through a relatively quiet offseason-until they made waves with a blockbuster trade.

Head coach Sean Payton and GM George Paton shook things up by acquiring Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle last week. This move instantly amps up Denver’s offense, giving quarterback Bo Nix a dynamic new target in the passing game.

Prior to this, the Broncos focused on retaining their core players-a smart, if not flashy, strategy for a team that posted a 14-3 record and reached the AFC Championship last season. But the Waddle trade changed the narrative, marking one of the NFL offseason's most significant moves. The Broncos gave up a first-round and a third-round pick, but Waddle’s positive attitude since joining has fans buzzing with excitement.

This strategic maneuver caught the eye of ESPN’s Ben Solak, who ranked the Broncos' offseason additions fifth in the league, behind only the Steelers, 49ers, Lions, and Saints.

“This is the sort of move that contending teams in rookie QB contract windows should make. With the 30th pick in a weak draft class, the Broncos were unlikely to get a needle-moving player for 2026. Instead, they used that pick (and a middle-round pick) to get Waddle,” Solak noted.

He’s spot on. With Nix's rookie contract keeping salary cap costs low, the Broncos are in a prime "win now" mode.

Bringing in Waddle signals Denver’s belief that they can secure two more wins in 2026 and capture the Lombardi Trophy. If Nix hadn’t suffered that ankle injury against the Bills, they might have already achieved that goal last year.

On the defensive side, Denver retained Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad, while moving on from Dre Greenlaw. Solak pointed out, “I do think that the Broncos’ linebackers were often exposed in man coverage last season, and with both Singleton and Strnad back in-house, teams with good pass-catching backs will continue stressing Denver’s second level.”

This could be the Achilles' heel of Vance Joseph’s otherwise stellar defense. It’ll be interesting to see if the Broncos address this by drafting an impactful linebacker in the second round of next month’s NFL Draft.

The Broncos are clearly making bold moves, and with the addition of Waddle, they’re sending a message that they’re serious about contending for the championship. Keep an eye on Denver as they continue to build a formidable team for the upcoming season.
