Broncos Interview Former Eagles Coach for Key Offensive Role

The Broncos' search for a new offensive coordinator has led them to a rising coach with experience guiding top young talent.

The Broncos are deep into their search for a new offensive coordinator, and one intriguing name has entered the mix: Brian Johnson.

According to multiple reports, Denver recently interviewed Johnson, who currently serves as the Commanders' assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. At 38, Johnson brings a blend of experience and upside that makes him a compelling candidate for a Broncos offense looking to turn the page.

Johnson spent the 2023 season as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, but his stint in that role was short-lived, ending after just one year. Still, his time in Philadelphia wasn’t without value-he previously worked as the team’s quarterbacks coach from 2021 to 2022, playing a key role in the development of Jalen Hurts under then-OC Shane Steichen. That two-year stretch saw Hurts take a massive leap, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance and an MVP-caliber season.

After parting ways with the Eagles, Johnson joined Dan Quinn’s staff in Washington for the 2024 season. There, he helped guide rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to a breakout campaign, one that ended with Daniels being named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. That kind of impact on a young QB is exactly the kind of résumé bullet point that resonates with teams like Denver-especially one still figuring out its long-term answer under center.

The Broncos, of course, are coming off a season where offensive inconsistency was a recurring theme. Earlier this week, they parted ways with Joe Lombardi, who had served as OC during a transitional year under Sean Payton. Now, the focus is on finding someone who can elevate the passing game and bring clarity to the quarterback position moving forward.

One internal candidate to keep an eye on is Davis Webb, the team’s current pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Webb is reportedly in the running and is considered one of the frontrunners for the job. But Johnson’s track record developing quarterbacks and designing passing attacks gives Denver a strong outside option with proven upside.

For a team looking to build a more dynamic and consistent offense, Johnson’s recent work with young QBs-and his experience in multiple offensive systems-makes him a name worth watching closely as the Broncos continue their search.
