The Denver Broncos are closing in on a key decision that could shape the future of their offense-and all signs are pointing toward Davis Webb stepping into the spotlight.
According to reports, the Broncos have officially interviewed Webb, their current pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, for the offensive coordinator role left vacant after the team parted ways with Joe Lombardi. And while nothing is set in stone just yet, Webb is widely viewed as the frontrunner for the job.
This move would mark a significant shift for head coach Sean Payton, who made headlines last week by letting go of Lombardi-one of his longtime assistants. The decision came on the heels of Payton publicly expressing dissatisfaction with the offense during his end-of-season press conference.
That kind of shake-up suggests Payton is looking to retool and reenergize the offensive identity in Denver. And Webb, a rising name in coaching circles, might just be the guy to help him do it.
Webb’s stock has been rising quickly around the league. He was in the mix for the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coaching job and reportedly drew interest from multiple teams looking to fill their offensive coordinator vacancies.
But as the coaching carousel spun, Webb withdrew from the Raiders’ search, and several of those other OC spots were filled elsewhere. That opened the door for Denver to potentially retain one of its most promising young coaches-and promote him.
Now, the biggest question looming isn’t whether Webb will take the job, but how much control he’ll have once he does. Will Sean Payton hand over play-calling duties to his new OC? Or will Webb step into a similar role as Lombardi, where Payton still holds the play sheet on Sundays?
Even if Webb doesn’t take over the headset on game day, a promotion would still give him more influence in the weekly game planning and offensive design. That’s no small thing for a coach many see as a rising star, and it could be exactly what the Broncos need to jumpstart an offense that struggled to find consistency this past season.
With Webb’s interview now complete and the team having satisfied its Rooney Rule requirements, an official announcement could be coming soon. If the Broncos do indeed elevate Webb, it’ll be a move that speaks to both continuity and fresh perspective-a young coach stepping into a larger role, ready to help reshape the offense in Denver.
