The Denver Broncos are at a pivotal moment as they approach the 2026 NFL Draft. With multiple areas needing attention-inside linebacker, tight end, running back, and offensive line depth-the Broncos must not only aim for a good draft but the right one.
Draft Strategy: Best Player Available (BPA)
One approach is to draft the best player available (BPA). This strategy, used by GM George Paton last year, saw the Broncos select cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round.
Although not universally popular, drafting the best talent on the board can gradually enhance the overall quality of the roster. It demands patience and discipline, especially if it means overlooking immediate needs.
Given the current roster, this approach could still be beneficial. Yet, with the Broncos' lack of free agency moves and recurring team needs, it's clear that some positions have been neglected over the years.
Draft Strategy: Team Needs
Alternatively, focusing on team needs could be the wiser choice. The Broncos have glaring needs at inside linebacker, tight end, and running back.
The offensive line also requires attention, as the last significant draft investment was Alex Forsyth in 2023. The linebacker position, in particular, has been a longstanding issue.
With the recent release of Dre Greenlaw, the room is thin, and the talent level is concerning.
The tight end position is another area needing reinforcement. Last year’s addition, Caleb Lohner, was a seventh-round pick with minimal experience. The current group struggled last season, and with Evan Engram underperforming, depth and talent are crucial for a postseason push.
Running back remains a question mark despite drafting RJ Harvey last year. While he showed promise, JK Dobbins' health remains a concern, making depth essential.
Which Path to Choose?
Each strategy has its merits, but given the Broncos' stagnant free agency activity and persistent team needs, it might be time to prioritize drafting for specific positions. Addressing these needs head-on could provide the immediate impact necessary to bolster the roster and set the stage for a successful season.
