With Marvin Mims out because of a foot injury, the Broncos are heading into Sunday’s home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with their return game in flux. Denver has options, but the most likely candidate to handle punt-return duties is reserve cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine.
Abrams-Draine was the next man up when Mims briefly left Denver’s Week 1 loss to Kansas City. He didn’t end up fielding a punt in that game, but the Broncos are comfortable with him if that assignment comes his way again.
“He does a lot of things well," head coach Sean Payton said Friday. "We have a handful of guys that we’ve repped at that position, so a lot of it depends on where they’re punting from, if that’s the case.”
A 2024 fifth-round pick, Abrams-Draine brings a decent resume from Missouri on kick returns. He had 32 runbacks for 670 yards and one touchdown there. His punt-return work was much lighter, with just six returns for 12 yards.
Denver used running backs RJ Harvey and Jonah Coleman as its primary kick returners against the Chiefs, and that setup could show up again against Jacksonville if Harvey is available. Harvey is questionable for Week 2 because of a hamstring injury, which adds another wrinkle to the special-teams picture.
If Harvey can go, he and Coleman could again handle kick returns while Abrams-Draine takes punts. Another possibility is a promotion from the practice squad, with wide receivers Kolbe Katsis or Michael Bandy mentioned as options.
Special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi said Week 1 went “solid” overall, with no major mistakes from the kicking, punting or return units. Still, he knows the job now is to keep adjusting as injuries force the Broncos to shuffle pieces around.
"Adjust, adapt and improvise," Rizzi affirmed to reporters on Friday. "Our phase always has the most moving parts as you guys know with injuries and whatnot.
So I think we talked about a little bit about this in training camp, having a lot of options. I felt like last year we had limited options in the return game specifically.
I thought we’ve done a great job overhauling that part of the roster this year with some more options. So the conversations are who’s going.
Every week, ‘Who are the two guys back on kick return? Who’s going to be the punt returner?’
Last year there wasn’t a lot of guys in that conversation. I think this year, having more options there is a big deal.
There are always going to be moving parts with injuries and whatnot, and that’s our job to make sure that obviously we handle that part.”

Broncos Facing Early Pressure After Brutal Week 2 Forecast
The Broncos opened the season with a rough offensive showing in a Week 1 loss to the Chiefs, and that slow start has already put a little extra weight on what comes next. Around the league, Denvers follow-up matchup against Jacksonville is being treated as an important early test, especially with the Jaguars coming off a convincing win over Cleveland.
ESPN analyst Pamela Maldonado is among those expecting the Broncos to come up short again, which would leave Denver staring at 0-2 before September is even fully underway. For a team trying to build momentum and avoid digging too deep a hole early, the matchup now carries more than just one games worth of pressure. [Read more 🡒]
Broncos Have No Excuse To Let This Home Bounce-Back Spot Slip
After a frustrating opening weekend, the Broncos get a chance to reset quickly with a Week 2 home date against the Jaguars, a matchup that looks more manageable on paper than the opener did. Denver is back in front of its own crowd with the chance to turn an 0-1 start into something steadier, and the contrast in roster strength makes this feel like the kind of spot a team trying to establish itself is expected to take advantage of.
Jacksonville arrives with some momentum of its own, riding a winning streak and still working through the early stages of a new regime, but that does not change the basic math for Denver. The Broncos have the more proven personnel group overall, and with the season still young, this is the sort of game that can say a lot about where they stand if they handle it the way a team with higher ambitions should. Broncos Lean On Sean Payton Familiarity As Week 2 Roster Gets Tested
The Broncos are leaning on familiarity as they get ready for their Week 2 home game against the Jaguars, and that starts with two practice-squad promotions that should help stabilize the roster. Fullback Adam Prentice and long snapper Mitch Fraboni were elevated to the active roster after both already saw action in the opener against the Chiefs, a sign Denver is staying close to the options it knows best as early-season injuries and game-day demands begin to stack up.
Marvin Mims absence is forcing the Broncos to be creative with return duties, so the staff is turning to existing roster pieces rather than reaching far outside the building. It is another example of how Sean Payton and his staff are managing the first stretch of the season, using players who have already been in the mix while waiting to see how long the special teams shuffle has to last.
