The Broncos are heading into Week 7 with a mix of good news and bad news on the injury front, but the biggest headline is the return of rookie running back Jonah Coleman.
Denver, sitting at 4-2 after navigating one of the league’s toughest schedules, goes on the road to face the Arizona Cardinals with Coleman coming off injured reserve. He should give the offense a badly needed jolt, especially with JK Dobbins struggling and Tyler Badie ruled out for this game because of a thumb injury. There’s even a chance Badie ends up on injured reserve when the Broncos make room for Jonathon Cooper on the 53-man roster.
Coleman’s return gives Denver something it’s been missing. He flashed in Week 2 and turned in an outstanding fourth quarter against the Jaguars, showing he can create after contact, handle pass protection and contribute as a receiver out of the backfield. For a running game that needs life, his comeback matters.
The Broncos may also get a boost from Pat Surtain II. Sean Payton stopped short of declaring anything, but Surtain has at least put himself in position to play Sunday after an ankle injury suffered against the 49ers a few weeks ago.
He was limited all week and ended up with a questionable tag. Denver could decide to give him another week, with the Chiefs looming next week, but there is at least a real chance he suits up against Arizona.
That would be a major help against a Cardinals passing attack built around Trey McBride and Michael Wilson. If Surtain is active, he’s the kind of player Denver would love to attach to one target and erase him from the game.
Not every update carries the same uncertainty. Riley Moss (ribs) and Jaylen Waddle (chest) were both on the injury report, but neither has a designation for the game.
They’re good to go. Moss, who first hurt the ribs in the preseason against the Green Bay Packers and then aggravated them against San Francisco, has already played in packages against the Seahawks.
Waddle briefly left the Seahawks game before returning, and after being upgraded to full on the final day of practice, he’s set for Sunday. Denver needs a bigger impact from him and wants him more consistently involved.
The one definite absence on defense is Talanoa Hufanga, who will miss his second straight game with an ankle injury. Hufanga has been a force since arriving in Denver and has been especially important this season, including the pick-six off Matthew Stafford and the later game-winning interception in the win over the Rams. His return had been expected to take 2-3 weeks after the Chargers game, and with him logging DNPs all week, even a possible return against the Chiefs now looks shaky.
Jonah Elliss is headed to injured reserve with an ankle injury, though Sean Payton said it is not season-ending. Elliss hobbled off late against the Seahawks so Denver wouldn’t have to burn a timeout, a small detail that spoke volumes about his toughness. The timeline for his return isn’t clear, and it may not come until later in the year or even the playoffs.

Broncos Tight End Situation Has Fans Watching One Ambitious Trade Idea
The Broncos search for help at tight end has drifted into ambitious territory, with Denver reportedly eyeing a player who could change the conversation at the position if he ever became available. The interest makes sense from the Broncos perspective, since the spot remains one they could still upgrade, and the name at the center of it carries real appeal because of his production and upside.
What makes the idea complicated is the timing around it. Detroit is still in the thick of the playoff race, and Denver does not have a surplus of draft assets to work with, so any serious push would require a lot of things to line up just right. For now, it is the kind of trade speculation that feels intriguing enough to follow closely, even if the path to a deal looks anything but simple. [Read more 🡒]
Cardinals Offense Faces Its Biggest Test Yet After Rams Upset
Denver heads into Week 7 at 4-2, and the record has held up in spite of an offense that has not looked nearly as steady as the defense behind it. The Broncos have leaned on a unit that continues to rank among the leagues better groups, while the offense has sputtered enough to keep the conversation centered on how much margin for error this team really has if it wants to keep stacking wins.
Arizonas upset over the Rams added another layer to this matchup, even if the Cardinals still look like a team with a shakier defense than Denvers. Jacoby Brissett has helped keep the Cardinals competitive on offense, but the bigger question for this game is whether the Broncos can avoid getting dragged into a tighter, lower-scoring fight than the betting market expects on the road. Broncos Secondary Suddenly Has A Good Problem At Corner
Patrick Surtain II was back on the practice field this week, which is a welcome sign for a Denver defense that has managed to hold up well without him. Still, the All-Pro corner is listed as questionable for Sundays game against the Arizona Cardinals, leaving the Broncos with a decision to make as they balance caution with the urgency of getting one of their top defenders back into the lineup.
Riley Moss has been cleared to return after dealing with a rib injury, and the broader picture in Denvers secondary has changed in a way that would have seemed unlikely a few weeks ago. Jahdae Barron and Kris Abrams-Draine have helped the group weather the absence, giving the Broncos some real flexibility if they decide Surtain needs one more week before a possible return against the Kansas City Chiefs.
