Davis Webb is making moves - and not necessarily the ones many expected.
After emerging as a dark horse candidate in this year’s NFL coaching carousel, Webb has pulled himself out of the running for the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coaching job. He had already interviewed twice with the team, but according to reports, he’s decided to step away from that opportunity.
That doesn’t mean Webb is stepping away from advancement altogether. Far from it. With the Raiders off the table, the 29-year-old is now being viewed as a leading contender for the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator position - a role that’s suddenly wide open after the team parted ways with Joe Lombardi.
Webb is currently Denver’s quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator, and his name has been buzzing around league circles for more than just the Broncos’ vacancy. He’s also drawn interest from the Ravens and Giants for OC roles, and even landed interviews for head coaching gigs in Buffalo and Baltimore. That’s a pretty quick rise for a guy who only recently hung up his cleats.
What makes Webb such an intriguing candidate? For starters, he’s already earned the trust of Broncos head coach Sean Payton, a coach known for his offensive acumen and high standards. And with Payton reportedly having interviewed just one known OC candidate so far - Buffalo quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry - Webb’s in-house experience and familiarity with the system could give him a real leg up.
Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, Webb’s withdrawal reshuffles the deck. With him out of the picture, Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is now seen as the frontrunner for the Raiders’ top job. Kubiak brings his own pedigree and experience to the table, but Webb stepping aside is certainly a twist in the process.
It’s clear that Webb’s coaching star is rising fast. Whether it’s in Denver or elsewhere, it feels like just a matter of time before he lands a coordinator role - or maybe even a head coaching gig down the line. For now, all eyes turn to the Broncos and what Sean Payton decides to do next.
