Broncos Chased Sam Darnold Twice Before He Chose Another Team

The Broncos made multiple attempts to land Sam Darnold over the years-but the quarterback's journey took a different path, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance with Seattle.

Back in 2018, the Denver Broncos had their sights set on Sam Darnold. Then-GM John Elway was reportedly eager-desperate, even-to move up in the draft and snag the USC quarterback.

The New York Giants, sitting at No. 2 overall, weren’t interested in dealing, and Darnold ultimately landed with the Jets at No. 3.

Elway, left without his preferred QB, went with pass rusher Bradley Chubb at No. 5.

That decision, in hindsight, stands out as one of the biggest “what-ifs” in recent Broncos history-especially considering Josh Allen was still on the board.

Fast forward to 2024, and Darnold was once again on Denver’s radar. This time it was current GM George Paton leading the charge during free agency.

The Broncos made a push, but Darnold chose Minnesota instead. That move turned out to be a turning point in his career.

In Minnesota, Darnold found his rhythm-and then some. He completed over 66% of his passes, threw for 4,319 yards, and racked up 35 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions.

It was the kind of breakout season that reminded everyone why he was once a top-three pick. He didn’t just manage games-he elevated the Vikings' offense and re-established himself as a legitimate franchise quarterback.

Denver, meanwhile, pivoted to the draft. With the 12th overall pick in 2024, they selected Bo Nix, a talented and poised signal-caller who’s quickly proven he belongs. Since entering the league, Nix has posted a strong 24-10 record as a starter-a clear sign that the Broncos may have finally found their guy under center.

But Darnold’s resurgence has been even more impressive. Since his Minnesota rebirth, he’s gone 28-6 as a starter, a mark that speaks volumes about his development and the systems he’s thrived in. Now with the Seattle Seahawks, Darnold has led them all the way to Super Bowl LX, where they’ll face off against the New England Patriots on Sunday night.

It’s a full-circle moment for a quarterback whose career once seemed stuck in neutral. And for the Broncos, it’s a reminder of how close they came-twice-to landing a player who's now one win away from a championship.
