The Denver Broncos’ 2025 season ended with a gut punch that fans are still feeling-an ankle injury to rookie quarterback Bo Nix in the AFC Divisional Round that sidelined him for the rest of the postseason. The team managed to edge out a dramatic 33-30 overtime win against the Buffalo Bills, but the victory came at a steep cost.
With Nix out, the reins were handed to backup Jarrett Stidham for the AFC Championship Game. Unfortunately for Denver, the ride stopped there. The Broncos ran into a red-hot New England Patriots squad led by rookie standout Drake Maye, and their Super Bowl hopes were dashed.
But while the playoff run ended in disappointment, there’s reason for optimism in Denver-and it starts with Nix’s recovery. The rookie quarterback underwent surgery on his injured ankle shortly after the injury, calling it a “very quick procedure.” According to Nix, he’s already eyeing a return to training within four to six weeks and doesn’t anticipate any long-term setbacks.
“I don't see it being an issue at all,” Nix said. “It won't affect my training. Won't affect my season at all.”
That’s welcome news for a franchise that saw its first-year signal-caller put together a strong campaign. Nix, the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, showed poise and productivity in his debut season. Over 17 games, he threw for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns against 11 interceptions-numbers that reflect both his arm talent and his ability to adjust to the pro game.
Nix’s development was one of the biggest storylines for Denver in 2025. Coming out of a college career that spanned Auburn and Oregon, there were questions about how quickly he’d acclimate to the NFL. But he answered those doubts with mature decision-making, strong leadership, and flashes of high-end playmaking that gave the Broncos a real sense of direction at the quarterback position.
Now, the focus shifts to 2026. With Nix expected to be fully healthy for offseason activities, Denver can build around him with confidence. The offense will have a full offseason to work with their young quarterback, and the coaching staff can continue tailoring the system to his strengths-something that became more evident as the season progressed.
For a team that’s been searching for stability under center since the Peyton Manning era, Nix’s emergence is a major development. And while the injury was a tough break at the worst possible time, the long-term outlook remains bright. If his rookie season was any indication, Bo Nix has the tools and the temperament to be the face of the franchise for years to come.
The Broncos didn’t get the ending they wanted in 2025, but they may have found their future.
