Steven Stamkos’ journey with the Nashville Predators hasn't exactly hit the high notes everyone expected. Despite enjoying his stint in Music City, the veteran star has found himself at the center of trade discussions throughout the year. While Stamkos isn't pushing for a move, there are a few teams he'd be more than happy to join, with one familiar contender leading the pack.
According to TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, if Stamkos were to consider a trade, his top choice would be a return to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild are also on his radar, rounding out his list of potential destinations.
“Steven Stamkos has a full no-move clause; he’s in control here, and he’s not asking to leave. He’s content in Nashville, but just in case Predators management approaches him with offers before next Friday, Stamkos and his camp have prepared a list of preferred destinations.
Topping that list is Tampa Bay, followed by Dallas and Minnesota. New Jersey is also in the mix, but it’s mainly the Lightning, Stars, and Wild.
This is likely a discussion for the summer-a summer trade-but keep an eye out just in case it happens sooner,” LeBrun shared.
At 36, Stamkos is in the second year of a four-year, $32 million contract he signed with the Predators in 2024. This season, he’s bounced back impressively, racking up 44 points (28 goals, 16 assists) over 57 games.
Leaving Tampa Bay hasn’t panned out as planned, so the idea of Stamkos returning has always made sense. His deep connection with the team, the players, and the city would make for an easy transition-almost like he never left.
Bringing Stamkos back would require some financial juggling to stay under the salary cap. Nashville might be open to retaining some salary or taking back a contract to make the trade work. As LeBrun notes, a trade seems more feasible in the offseason, which would allow GM Julien BriseBois to manage Stamkos’ $8 million cap hit more effectively.
However, with Stamkos holding a full no-movement clause, if he chooses to return to Tampa Bay in pursuit of a third Stanley Cup-where he spent most of his illustrious career-it’s likely that Barry Trotz, or whoever is in charge, will make it happen.
