Dallas is turning to Trey Taylor to help patch a battered blue line, and the timing couldn’t be more direct: his first NHL game is set for Thursday night against the Canadiens.
The Stars recalled the AHL defenseman on Thursday as they prepared for the matchup with Montreal. The roster shuffle came after depth defenseman Kyle Capobianco was hurt, while forward Dylan Hryckowian was assigned to the AHL to open up space. Tristan Bertucci was a name some around the team had circled as a possible call-up, but Dallas chose Taylor instead.
Taylor brings a physical presence on the back end, and the 24-year-old has spent this season in the AHL after a steady climb through college and the minors. The six-foot-two defenseman is in his second full professional season after signing with Dallas following three years at Clarkson University.
His college production kept trending up. Taylor had eight points as a freshman, then finished his junior and final NCAA season with 29 points in 39 games.
He carried that offensive touch into his first full year with Texas, posting eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points across 70 games. This season, he has not scored yet, but he does have three assists in eight games.
Now he gets his first shot at the NHL level against a Montreal club that reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season. For Taylor, Thursday is the debut. For Dallas, it’s a chance to get a fresh body onto a defense that needs one.

Stars Suddenly Tied To A Trade Drama Fans Can't Ignore
The Dylan Larkin situation in Detroit has turned into one of those league-wide storylines that can quickly ripple beyond the Red Wings. Larkin has requested a trade, and the team suspended him without pay after he did not show up for a game, leaving the market suddenly in motion as the Red Wings sift through interest and weigh their options.
Minnesota is believed to have the strongest offer on the table, and there is still no deal in place, which keeps the door open for plenty of speculation around the league. Detroit is also staring at another important deadline with Simon Edvinsson, who needs a contract by December 1 while multiple teams remain in the mix, including San Jose, and the Red Wings continue to test different contract lengths in talks. Stars Suddenly Face A Massive Jason Robertson Decision
The next big item on the Stars agenda is Jason Robertson, who is in the final season of his current deal and enters the summer with plenty of contract intrigue hanging over him. Dallas would obviously prefer to get ahead of it, and general manager Jim Nill has said he hopes to open extension discussions with Robertsons camp in January, giving the club a chance to work through the situation before it becomes more complicated.
For now, there is no certainty that those talks will produce a new contract, which is what makes this such a noteworthy subplot for a team with expectations to stay in the mix. Robertson remains one of the key pieces of the roster, and the timing of his next deal could shape more than just the offseason calendar if the Stars cannot find common ground when negotiations begin. Stars Put Cameron Hughes In Roster Limbo With Latest Move
Cameron Hughes has spent the start of the season on injured reserve, and now his path back to the Dallas Stars has taken another turn. The club placed the center on waivers, opening a 24-hour window for any other NHL team to claim him while he works his way back from the upper-body injury that kept him out of the lineup.
If Hughes goes unclaimed, the Stars will have the option to send him to their AHL affiliate in Texas, where he could continue his recovery and get back into game shape. For Dallas, it is another roster decision shaped as much by patience as by personnel, with Hughes still waiting for the chance to return after a preseason setback. [Read more 🡒]
