Stars Survived A Wild Avalanche Battle Colorado Won't Soon Forget

Cale Makar's return from family duties wasn't enough to steer the Avalanche to a win as they navigated a night filled with disallowed goals and a shootout defeat to the Stars.

Cale Makar was back in the Avalanche lineup Wednesday night, and Colorado still walked away with a result that felt hard to explain.

After missing Tuesday’s game while he and his wife welcomed twin boys, Makar returned for the second half of the back-to-back against Dallas at Ball Arena. He logged 22 minutes and 54 seconds and gave Colorado a needed lift on the blue line. But the night ended in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Stars, with Roope Hintz scoring the winner in the fourth round.

The game never settled into a clean rhythm for the Avalanche. Colorado thought it had struck first in the opening period when Jaden Schwartz scored, only for Dallas to win the challenge for offside. Later in the frame, Gabriel Landeskog appeared to finish another chance, but officials ruled the puck had been kicked in with a distinct kicking motion, wiping that goal away too.

That left the Avalanche with two disallowed goals before the first period was over, a rough start to a night that only got stranger.

Colorado finally got one to count in the second period when Landeskog scored again, this time legally. Dallas answered not long after through Miro Heiskanen to make it 1-1. The Stars then grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the third period when Arttu Hyry intercepted a play involving Makar near the blue line and turned it into a shorthanded breakaway goal.

The Avalanche responded again. Brock Nelson tied it 2-2, sending the game into overtime and eventually the shootout, where Hintz delivered the deciding goal to help Dallas split the two-game set.

Nazem Kadri finished with two assists for Colorado, and Casey DeSmith made 25 saves for the Stars. The Avalanche came out of the night at 4-2-1, while Dallas moved to 3-3-1.

For Makar, the return came during a week that carried a much bigger personal meaning than the final score. For Colorado, the challenge now is putting a bizarre loss behind it and turning the emotion of the week into a win.

Stars Suddenly Have A Lineup Decision Fans Will Be Watching

The Avalanches coaching staff changed this week with the hiring of Brett McLean, but the more immediate ripple for Dallas is on the roster side. The Stars are still sorting through their center depth as they wait for Wyatt Johnston to get back into the mix, a boost that would help after he missed the recent games against Colorado because of an illness.

Oskar Backs situation adds another layer to the picture. He left last nights win over Colorado with an upper-body injury, and Dallas has not confirmed his status for Saturday, leaving the Stars with at least one lineup spot very much up in the air. For a team trying to settle in after a tight stretch, the timing of Johnstons return and Backs availability could matter just as much as anything happening behind the bench in Denver. [Read more 🡒]

Dallas Stars Prospects Are Already Raising An Uncomfortable Early Question

The Texas Stars have had a choppy opening to the AHL season, with a shootout win and a shootout loss followed by back-to-back defeats against Hershey. The results have been uneven enough on their own, but the bigger concern for Dallas is the early offensive shape of the roster, which has produced just eight regulation goals in four games. Mike Sgarbossa has led the way in points, and a few newcomers have given the lineup some life, including goaltender Brandon Halverson and defenseman Jack Anderson.

Emil Hemming was always going to be watched closely, and so far the early returns have been quiet. The top prospect is still looking for his first point of the season, and the blank slate has now stretched into a longer scoreless run at the pro level. For a farm team trying to find consistency, that leaves one of the organizations most important young forwards stuck in the middle of an uncomfortable early question about when the production is going to arrive. Stars Stay In The Avalanche Race After Another Tight Battle

The Avalanche and Stars have already given the Central Division an early-season feel of a race that could go a long way. In a pair of tight games, the clubs split the set, with Colorado picking up three of a possible four points against Dallas and showing why it is once again one of the teams the Stars have to track closely over the long haul.

Jaden Schwartz has been part of the early push for Colorado, while Brock Nelson has also helped steady the Avalanche as they keep building through the opening stretch. Colorado now gets a more favorable run of games ahead, and if it takes advantage, the Stars may have to chase a little harder just to keep pace. [Read more 🡒]
