Stars Suddenly Pulled Into A Massive Dylan Larkin Trade Twist

Speculation mounts as the Detroit Red Wings' Dylan Larkin considers a pivot to Dallas amid ongoing trade discussions that could reshape the NHL landscape.

The Detroit Red Wings are still working through a Dylan Larkin trade market that keeps getting a little wider.

Larkin asked for a trade from the club this off-season, and while he originally said he would only accept a deal to Florida, Minnesota and Vegas, Dallas now appears to be in the mix too. On Thursday, Ansar Khan of mLive.com reported that the Stars have joined Larkin’s preferred list, a possibility that had been circulating for weeks after Jeff Marek raised it on The Sheet.

The asking price has already created a roadblock. Khan reported that Detroit first asked Dallas for Wyatt Johnston in a Larkin deal, and Stars general manager Jim Nill wasn’t interested.

Another possible framework would involve Jason Robertson heading to Detroit, but that comes with its own complications. The Stars are believed to be open to moving the restricted free agent winger for Larkin, yet any deal would need more pieces and would also hinge on whether Robertson would agree to a long-term extension with the Red Wings, where he spends part of his off-season.

Detroit hasn’t found much traction beyond that. The San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken and New Jersey Devils have all shown interest, but Larkin has not been eager to open his list much further. That’s part of why Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has made it clear he isn’t promising anything.

“My job as the manager of the Detroit Red Wings is always to do what is in the best interest of the Detroit Red Wings, and I will act accordingly to that,” Yzerman said last month. “I cannot make any guarantees, or did not make any guarantees, that that request could or would be met.”

Larkin remains No. 1 on TFP’s latest Summer Trade Watch list. He has five years left on his contract, carries an $8.7 million cap hit, and is owed $8 million in actual salary over the next three seasons, $7.6 million in salary in 2029-30 and $7 million in 2030-31. He turns 30 on July 30.

Last season, Larkin played 74 games for Detroit and put up a career-high 34 goals along with 33 assists for 67 points, which stands as the sixth-highest total of his career so far.

Patrick Kane could also be on the move. Multiple reports indicate the veteran winger may not re-sign with the Red Wings, with a return to the Chicago Blackhawks now being speculated. The Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs have also been linked to Kane, who has 1,400 career points.
