The Dallas Stars will have to wait a little longer for Colin Blackwell to get back into the mix.
On Monday, head coach Glen Gulutzan said the veteran forward is dealing with a lower-body injury and is day-to-day. Gulutzan added that Blackwell is expected to miss a few days, which could rule him out for Dallas’ next couple of preseason games, though he should still be on track for the start of the regular season.
Blackwell, 33, appeared in 70 games for the Stars last season and finished with four goals and 11 assists for 15 points. He was quiet in the playoffs, going scoreless in Dallas’ first-round loss to the Minnesota Wild in six games.
A North Andover, Maryland native, Blackwell was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He spent four seasons at Harvard, where he totaled 19 goals and 39 assists for 58 points in 94 games.
He turned pro in the 2016-17 season with the Sharks’ AHL team, the San Jose Barracuda, posting four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 57 games. The following year, after attending Buffalo’s rookie camp as a free agent, he signed with the Rochester Americans and put together a breakout stretch, recording 17 goals and 28 assists for 45 points in 61 games.
Blackwell signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators in July 2018 and earned his first NHL games over the next two seasons, collecting three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 33 total games.
He later joined the New York Rangers before the 2020-21 season and became a full-time NHL player there. Since then, he has also suited up for the Seattle Kraken, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Chicago Blackhawks before signing with Dallas in July 2024.
