The Stars’ 2-0 preseason win over Minnesota gave Dallas a few things to chew on, but the biggest early story may be Trey Taylor. The 24-year-old defenseman followed a strong showing against the St. Louis Blues with another impressive night, and his game keeps looking more NHL-ready by the shift.
Taylor’s value has been easy to spot in the preseason. Against St.
Louis, his penalty killing stood out when he helped fend off nearly two minutes of a five-on-three. He kept showing the same traits against Minnesota: clean skating, calm positioning and the kind of defensive poise that makes coaches pay attention.
Glen Gulutzan has certainly noticed.
“He’s been getting more time with the big guys. And you can see he’s fitting in more and more,” Gulutzan said following the win against the Blues. “He’s made a big step.”
Taylor’s path is still crowded, especially with Dallas’ defensive depth, and the cap situation makes an opening-night roster spot a long shot. But he’s done enough to put himself squarely in the conversation for a call-up if injuries hit the blue line during the season.
“I think it’s just day by day; I try not to look too far ahead,” Taylor said on the possibility of making the team. “You never know whether it’s opening roster or just getting a recall and playing your first game in the NHL.”
Veteran Kyle Burroughs is making his case too. He’s been one of the more physical presences in camp, dropping the gloves in each of his first two games, and his 201 games of NHL experience may give him the edge. Still, Taylor’s rise has been one of the more encouraging developments of the preseason.
Joel Kiviranta’s return has also given Dallas something useful to watch. Three years after his last appearance in victory green, the Finnish winger is back with the Stars, and his old reputation in Dallas is tied to one unforgettable moment: his historic Game 7 hat trick against the Colorado Avalanche in 2020. But what makes him relevant in this roster battle is what he brings away from the puck.
Kiviranta’s penalty killing and forechecking fit the kind of bottom-six role Dallas is trying to sort out, and those traits could separate him from Collin Backwell, Oskar Bäck and Arttu Hyry, who are all fighting for a fourth-line spot. He also showed the speed and hockey sense that made him such a useful player for Dallas across four seasons.
On the penalty kill, Kiviranta and Hyry looked comfortable together on the first unit, forcing Minnesota’s power play to the outside. That matters for a Stars team that finished 13th in the league on the PK last season after ranking fourth the year before. If the power play keeps humming, a sharper penalty kill could make Dallas even more dangerous in special teams.
In goal, the Stars had to adjust on the fly. Jake Oettinger was originally slated to start, according to Gulutzan, but he was scratched shortly before puck drop. Rémi Poirier stepped in and handled the assignment cleanly, stopping all 24 shots he faced.
The 24-year-old, a 2020 sixth-round pick, built on a strong year with the Texas Stars, where he posted a .912 save percentage and a 2.61 goals-against average. He still has a difficult climb with one of the league’s best goalie tandems ahead of him, but Poirier continues to show the kind of upside that could put him in line for a backup role down the road.
Gulutzan has not said why Oettinger was scratched.
