The Dylan Larkin trade situation is still stuck in place, with the Red Wings and their captain’s camp trying to find a path that works for everyone and not getting much traction yet.
Larkin asked for a trade this offseason, and his original list of destinations was short: Florida, Minnesota and Vegas. That list stayed unchanged for a while, but it now includes Dallas as well. Ansar Khan of mLive.com reported that the Stars had been viewed as a possible landing spot for weeks, and they’re now officially on Larkin’s list.
Even with Dallas in the mix, there’s a long way to go before anything happens. The Stars’ situation is tied up with Jason Robertson, who would need to be moved back to Detroit as part of the deal or sent elsewhere to clear the cap room Dallas would need to take on Larkin. On top of that, Detroit asked for center Wyatt Johnston, and that was a non-starter for Dallas GM Jim Nill.
If Robertson won’t sign in Detroit and Nill won’t part with Johnston, the framework doesn’t leave much room to maneuver.
There are also other teams poking around outside Larkin’s preferred group. The San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken and New Jersey Devils have all shown interest, but Larkin hasn’t signaled any willingness to widen the list to include them.
That leaves the key question hanging: how far is Larkin willing to go to make this happen, and how much will the Red Wings budge? Yzerman has already made his stance clear.
“My job as the manager of the Detroit Red Wings is always to do what is in the best interest of the Detroit Red Wings, and I will act accordingly to that,” Yzerman said last month. “I cannot make any guarantees, or did not make any guarantees, that that request could or would be met.”
The numbers make Larkin a major piece in any deal. He turns 30 on July 30 and is under contract for five more years at an $8.7 million cap hit. His actual salary is set at $8 million over the next three seasons, then $7.6 million, and finally $7 million in the last two years.
He also just turned in a career year, finishing with 34 goals and 33 assists for 67 points in 74 games. That was his sixth-highest point total.
So the market is there, the interest is there, and the list is still the biggest obstacle. The only real question now is whether one of Larkin’s preferred teams gets it done, or whether he eventually opens the door to someone else.
