The Minnesota Wild wrapped up their preseason Friday night with a 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars, but the bigger story was less about the final score and more about what the lineup looked like heading toward opening night.
Barring any changes, the Wild’s roster appears to be mostly set, with the one exception being backup goalie Riley Mercer. Jesper Wallstedt made his second straight start in net, while regular-season backup Calvin Pickard sat out the game. Filip Gustavsson remained out while recovering from surgery and is expected to miss the start of the season.
Dallas struck first just after the midway point of the opening period, and the Wild spent the rest of the night trying to chase the game. Minnesota answered in the second period to make it 1-1, but the Stars reclaimed the lead before the period ended and held on from there. The Wild had their chances late, and the game finished with a burst of fights, but the score stayed 2-1.
One of the clearest positives for Minnesota was its second line. Matt Boldy and Joel Eriksson Ek continue to look like a natural fit together, and Blake Coleman has slotted in well on the wing after Marcus Johansson returned to Sweden.
Against Dallas, that group showed exactly why the Wild are sticking with it. Eriksson Ek scored the Wild’s lone goal, with Coleman and Boldy picking up the assists.
Coleman also stood out as part of the Wild’s newer faces making an impact. He and Olli Määttä both contributed on the penalty kill and made a few key plays to keep pucks away from danger.
Their stickwork, especially the poke checks in the defensive zone, repeatedly disrupted Dallas possessions. Maxim Shabanov also made his presence felt, and his willingness to shoot jumped out in a lineup that can sometimes overpass.
“…yeah he’s got some good instincts on the power play, I think that’s what you like, I thought tonight when we did get set up, when we were going…guys had a shot mentality, recovered pucks well and Shabanov individually made some good reads and some good plays with the puck, so I think that part of the game is a strength of his,” said head coach John Hynes to the media in his postgame press conference when asked about Shabanov's game.
The night took a sharp turn in the final minutes, when the game dissolved into a string of fights. These weren’t isolated scraps between two players; whole lines got involved, and the chaos escalated fast.
Even Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov got drawn into it, which is not the kind of scene the Wild want to see in preseason or otherwise. After that, the Nick Foligno, Michael McCarron, Marcus Foligno line came over the boards, and that shift ended in another fight.
Seven fighting majors were handed out in the closing stretch.
“Yeah, I mean Bolds (Boldy) is fighting; I don’t think you want that, so just our chance is to step up, and that’s the game that we have to play: physical, and we’re going to get tested a lot this year because of our stars, and we want to battle back,” said Marcus Foligno to the media after the game when asked about Boldy and Kaprizov being involved in the fights at the end.
Minnesota now gets a few practice days before opening the regular season on the road against the Nashville Predators on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The Wild then return home to face the Boston Bruins on Saturday, Oct. 3.
