Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber fractured his skull in Friday’s 2-1 preseason loss to the Dallas Stars, and the team says he has already undergone successful surgery.
The Wild announced the injury after the game on Sept. 25, 2026, and said a recovery timeline will be shared later. Wild GM Bill Guerin offered a brief update through Michael Russo of The Athletic: “He just had a serious surgery and an injury,” said Wild GM Bill Guerin, per Michael Russo of the Athletic, “so we’re just gonna (update) you guys when the time’s right.
But he’s doing well. He’s doing really well, which is good news.
And we’ll just follow the doctor’s lead.”
The injury happened in the middle of the second period in Minnesota’s defensive zone. On the sequence, a shot by Miro Heiskanen appeared to hit Faber in the ear as he was battling Stars forward Sam Steel near the left side face-off dot.
Faber got back up after briefly staying down and skated off. He logged 14:27 of ice time, the fewest among Minnesota defensemen.
Faber, 24, is about to enter the second season of the eight-year contract he signed in 2024. The deal carries an $8.5MM AAV, the highest on the Wild blue line and runs through 2033.
It is the largest extension and the highest cap hit for a defenseman in franchise history. Last season, Faber played 80 games and set career highs with 15 goals and 51 points while helping Minnesota reach the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Skull fractures have shown up in other NHL cases in recent years. John Carlson suffered one just before Christmas in 2022 after a slap shot from Winnipeg Jets defenseman Brenden Dillon struck him in the ear, leaving him with a cut in his head, a fractured skull and a lacerated temporal artery. He missed three months before returning against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 23.
Former Wild teammate Mats Zuccarello also dealt with a skull fracture earlier in his career. In 2015, while with the Rangers in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he took a shot from teammate Ryan McDonagh and suffered a hairline fracture in his skull.
The injury left him unable to speak for four days and temporarily without feeling in his arm. He eventually returned by the end of New York’s playoff run, when the Rangers fell to the Lightning in seven games in the Eastern Conference Final.

The New Jersey Devils claimed goalie Remi Poirier from Dallas, while the St. Louis Blues took defenseman Justin Barron off waivers from Nashville and the Predators also placed Ilya Lyubushkin and Nick Perbix on waivers ahead of the regular season.
For Dallas, the move chips away at a bit of organizational depth in goal before the schedule even starts, especially after Poirier spent last season building his case in Texas. He had not yet reached the NHL level, but his work with the AHL club had given the Stars another option in the pipeline, and now that option belongs to New Jersey as the roster crunch tightens.
