The Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings may be thinking a step ahead while the rest of the NHL keeps busy reshaping rosters this offseason.
According to TSN insider Darren Dreger, both clubs have an eye on next summer and the remote possibility that Auston Matthews or Connor McDavid could become available before the final years of their contracts. That kind of long view shapes how a front office handles everything now, from cap planning to roster construction.
“Like I think Dallas is one of those teams that is sitting there going, LA would be another, they’re sitting there going, ‘OK, let’s just get through next season. If we can get through next season and either Auston Matthews or Connor McDavid happen to land on the table here, we want to be a player in that.’ So they do have to be mindful of how they build their roster,”
Matthews, 28, has two years left on the four-year, $53 million extension he signed with the Maple Leafs in 2023. McDavid, 29, is set to enter the first year of the two-year, $25 million extension he signed with the Oilers in October next season, 2026-27.
Dallas and Los Angeles obviously aren’t the only teams watching for that kind of opportunity. But Dreger’s mention of those two stands out, especially the Stars, who have already been tied to big names such as Dylan Larkin and Zach Werenski. If those pursuits come up empty, Jim Nill may still have something major in mind for next summer.

Stars Development Camp Is Putting One Intriguing Young Name On Notice
The Stars have 35 prospects and young signees in Frisco this week for a development camp built as much around education as on-ice work. Over four days, the organization is putting players through workouts, meetings with coaches and development staff, and testing designed to show what each skater needs to sharpen next, from physical conditioning to nutrition and rest.
For some of the names in the building, the trip is about getting an early feel for how Dallas operates. Jakub Vanek, the second-round pick who flew in from Czechia, is getting his first real interaction with the organization, while first-rounder Emil Hemming arrives with a more seasoned background after two OHL seasons and a heavy playoff run last spring. For a team that is trying to stock the pipeline properly, camp is less about instant answers than about setting the tone for what comes next. [Read more 🡒]
Stars Suddenly Sit At Center Of This Weeks NHL Trade Chaos
The trade market is starting to thrum just as the league edges toward free agency, and the Stars have found themselves in the middle of it whether they planned to or not. Around the NHL, a cluster of big names is drawing attention, with some players openly angling for a change of scenery and others becoming magnets for interest as teams sort through their summer plans.
Jason Robertson is part of that swirl, and his situation alone has been enough to keep Dallas in the conversation. The Stars are trying to manage a delicate negotiating spot while also weighing a market that could get crowded fast, especially with other front-line talent and defense help moving around the board. For a team with bigger aspirations, the next step here could say plenty about how aggressively it wants to push. [Read more 🡒]
