Stars Just Made Their Goaltending Plan A Lot Clearer

The Dallas Stars secure their goaltending future by extending Casey DeSmith's contract, banking on his proven track record and exceptional road performance.

The Dallas Stars have locked in Casey DeSmith for the long haul, agreeing to a two-year contract extension worth $5 million that will kick in at the start of the 2027-28 season and run through 2028-29.

General manager Jim Nill said the move was a priority for the organization, and the Stars made it official with DeSmith heading into his third season with the club. The deal carries an average annual value of $2.5 million.

“Extending Casey has been a priority for us, and we’re excited to have him locked up for two more years,” said Nill. “He’s been incredibly reliable during his time with our organization, and we are looking forward to the tandem of Casey and Jake continuing to anchor our team moving forward.”

DeSmith, 35, joined Dallas as a free agent in the 2024 offseason and has given the team steady production in net. In his time with the Stars, he has gone 29-16-8 with a .911 save percentage, a 2.50 goals-against average and three shutouts.

His work away from home has stood out even more. Over the last two seasons, among goaltenders with at least 10 road appearances, DeSmith ranks tied for second and third in the NHL in road goals-against average and save percentage, at 2.34 and .918.

The 2025-26 season also brought a milestone stretch for DeSmith. From Oct. 26 to Dec. 23, 2025, he put together a career-best 13-game point streak, going 9-0-4. At the time, that run stood as a franchise record.

Across his NHL career, the six-foot, 193-pound netminder has posted a 99-69-29 record with a .910 save percentage, 2.74 goals-against average and 13 shutouts in 220 regular-season games. He enters the 2026-27 season fifth among active American-born goaltenders with 13 shutouts.

DeSmith has also been a winner at the league level for years, reaching at least 10 victories in seven of his eight NHL seasons. He has recorded 15 wins three times, including last season with Dallas.

Before arriving in Texas, the Rochester, New Hampshire native represented the United States at the 2023 IIHF World Championship in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia. He finished that tournament with a 5-2-0 record, a .918 save percentage, a 1.95 goals-against average and two shutouts, earning a spot as one of Team USA’s top three players.

Matt Duchene's Setback Leaves Stars Facing An Opening Night Problem

Matt Duchenes return from an upper-body injury has not moved as quickly as the Stars hoped, and his preseason has been a quiet one by necessity. The veteran center has been dealing with the issue since training camp, which has limited his ice time and kept him out of all preseason games, leaving Dallas to sort through its early-season forward plans without one of its more versatile pieces.

The latest wrinkle is a setback that has clouded his status at the start of the regular season, and it puts the Stars in a tricky spot as opening night approaches. Duchene is expected to settle into a third-line role with power-play duty once he is cleared, so his absence would force Dallas to open the season without a player it had penciled in for meaningful minutes right away. Stars Used A Rare Getaway To Strengthen What Matters Most

A four-day trip to Traverse City gave the Stars a chance to step away from their normal routine and work in a setting that had long been used by the Red Wings. Dallas used the stay for two practices, but the bigger value came from the time spent together in a different environment as the club continues preparing for the regular season.

Coach Glen Gulutzan and general manager Jim Nill both pointed to the benefits of that kind of setting, where team cohesion can grow as much as on-ice sharpness. For a roster trying to get its footing before the games start counting, the getaway offered a rare chance to tighten the bonds that often matter most once the schedule gets rolling. [Read more 🡒]

Stars Just Sent A Clear Message About Casey DeSmith

Casey DeSmith is sticking around in Dallas for the long haul after the Stars agreed to a two-year contract extension, a move that gives the club another layer of stability in goal. The veteran netminder was already entering the final season of his previous three-year deal, and the new agreement keeps him in the organization as he moves deeper into his 30s.

For the Stars, the timing says plenty about how they view DeSmiths place in the room and on the roster. He has settled into the kind of role teams value in a crowded playoff race, and Dallas clearly sees enough reliability there to commit well beyond the present. What comes next is the financial structure of the deal, which lines up with the rest of the clubs longer-term planning. [Read more 🡒]
